Grade 4-7 This obtuse collection of photographs takes readers on a tour of major and minor buildings around the world. In the accompanying text Isaacson discusses the elements that give a building its character and attempts to explain how the harmony of these elements makes a structure beautiful. Unfortunately, the organization of the book is so fragmented, jumping from place to place, backwards and forwards through time, that the result is more a travelogue than a survey of architectural styles. After looking at the Taj Mahal, the Parthenon, and Chartres, Isaacson examines building materials, windows, doors, roofs, and ornamentation. Some points are belabored, while others are not clearly defined, and the ``gee-whiz'' tone quickly becomes annoying. The 93 color photographs are mostly of high quality, and each is numbered for reference within the text. Because each building generally is allotted only one photograph, even when a different element is being discussed, readers are frequently required to turn back to a previous picture. An appended list of the photographs purports to offer additional information about the buildings and structures discussed but, for the most part, simply repeats information previously given. About the Author

Lance Grande has been doing paleontological fieldwork in the Fossil Butte Member of southwestern Wyoming for more than thirty years and is one of the world’s foremost authorities on this amazing locality. He is also a curator at the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, where he conducts research on fishes, paleontology, geology, and evolutionary biology. He is the award-winning author of more than one hundred books and scientific articles, including The Lost World of Fossil Lake: Scenes from Deep Time and Gems and Gemstones: Timeless Natural Beauty of the Mineral World, both published by the University of Chicago Press. Gems and Gemstones won the 2009 PROSE Award in Earth Sciences, and in 2012 he received the Robert H. Gibbs Award for an Outstanding Body of Published Work in Systematic Ichthyology. He is a Lecturer at the University of Chicago, and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Illinois. At the University of Chicago he also serves on the Council of the Graham School, and on the Committee on Evolutionary Biology. He is a board member for the Chicago Council on Science and Technology, and serves on the Executive Steering Committee for The Encyclopedia of Life.

I have been waiting for the existence of this book ever since I first saw a picture of the prehistoric bat, Icaronycteris index,in 1997 when reading about prehistoric mammals. The deposits of Fossil Lake reveal schools of fish, as well as mysterious birds, still poorly understood insects, assorted reptiles, and bizarre mammals. This book is full of beautiful fossils and the text serves as a springboard for further research on the extraordinary material. I must issue a minor warning to defend this fine book: If you are looking for a book about dinosaurs, do not buy this book. The exquisite reptile on the cover is a Saniwa ensidens, an extinct relative of the Komodo Dragon. They say a picture worth a thousand words; with this book, I believe it.

Lance Grande's latest book on the fossils of the Green River formation of Wyoming is an outstanding work, written by the world's premier expert on this region. Focusing primarily on the fossils of one locale--the Fossil Butte Member, or Fossil Lake, (the locale most abundant with fossils)--it covers everything from bacteria through various invertebrates, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, and plants. It is lavishly illustrated with hundreds of full-color photographs. The text focuses on the taxonomy of the fauna (the interrelationships between species) and describes what is known about how they lived. While professionals and serious amateurs may get the most out of the text, everyone will enjoy the photographs and accompanying captions. One word of advice: if you are serious about digging for fossil fish in the Green River formation (there are several quarries you can do so for a fee), don't expect this book alone to allow you to fully identify your finds. For that, get a copy of the 1984 second edition of Grande's earlier work, "Paleontology of the Green River Formation, with a Review of the Fish Fauna", Bulletin 63 from the Geological Survey of Wyoming. This pamphlet gives full descriptions of the various fish species (things like how many anal fin rays a Knightia eocaena has or how many caudal vertebrae a Phareodus encaustus has), but Grande has updated the taxonomy in the new book. Bulletin 63 is usually available on Amazon or you can download it from the WGS website but make sure you get the correct version. Until recently what they has posted there was the older 1980 edition with only the cover from the 1984 edition. The correct edition is posted now.

A fossil hunting partner of mine emailed me about this book, telling me that it helped reaffirm why we spend countless hours in remote locations breaking rocks in the relentless wind and sun of the American west. I had previously purchased Lance Grande's more modest work "Paleontology of the Green River Formation with a Review of the Fish Fauna" (Geological Survey of Wyoming/Bulletin 63 1984) and knew of the authors familiarity and expertise with this fascinating subject... Grande is considered the foremost authority on this amazing fossil site. Certainly, this book confirms his authority and is the definitive work on the vast, highly productive Fossil Lake/Green River formation.The Lost World of Fossil Lake: Snapshots from Deep Time, takes the publishing of what is an essentially scientific work to a entirely new level. It is a gorgeous publication for anyone interested in natural history, fossils, biological evolution and the joy of discovery. The photography, typography, layout and printing are first rate... the book is beautiful - and worthy of any coffee table presentation. More importantly, the depth and perceptive nature of the text compels readers to contemplate the meaning and implications of each and every paragraph. This is as good a "read" as you'll find in a book about fossil discoveries - and (hip hip hurrah!) there's not a dinosaur bone to be found on any page. Paleontology, despite what one might think from the sheer volume of popular publications, is not all about old T-Rex.Lance Grande shows us how this immense fossil formation, certainly one of the most prolific "dig sites" in the world presents us with a snapshot of the early Eocene period, long after the extinction of dinosaurs. It was a time when the north American continent was once again connected from coast to coast (a vast inland sea was gone) and the climate was subtropical - much warmer and far wetter than today.Readers will discover what this region looked like 55 million years ago, how the fossil lake system was formed, what flora/fauna thrived and died within it's waters and how they were preserved for mankind to discover and interpret.My guess is that other readers will be equally as impressed, amazed and delighted by this book. Highly recommended!

I have known of Fossil Buttes for 50 years. This book tells the story of The Lost World of Fossil Lake. The little gift shop did not do justice to seeing what has been 'unearthed" from this site. A visit in the summer to the actual quarry sites is too hot and too dusty for my wife and too difficult for my old knees. The author has turned a scientific book into a work of art and readability that is so enjoyable that I have read passages aloud to friends at dinner. It is a fascinating book and when you consider the cost of travel today, this is the best way in the world to visit and explore Fossil Butte Monument. Many Thanks to the author for make ancient rock specimens "come alive" in this book. The book stays out so we can look at it again and again and share it with friends.

Excellent book, high quality printing and Grande does a great job covering all aspects of the fossil lake region of the West.

This is the definitive book on the Green River Formation fossils!!! It is very well written and produced on very high grade paper with outstanding photography of the fossils. If you are interested in the fossils of this region then this is the book to have. Well worth the cost!

The people chosen here happen to be MY favorite people as well, over 110 portraits immortalized by master caricaturist Drew Friedman of the "folks" that dreams are made of. In fact, I keep it by my bed stand because its a personal comfort to know that if I ever can't sleep, I can wake up at 3am and reach for Drew's soothing images of Ted Healy, Sammy Petrillo, Tor Johnson, Joe Franklin, Forrest J. Ackerman and Bobby Barber. A smile or laugh on every page. A truly beautiful book.

The book was delivered today and I was immediately entranced. I stood in the living room, with my overcoat on, paging through it for twenty minutes before I snapped out of it. I haven’t put it down since. These portraits are dazzling, affectionate (mostly) and true (entirely). The virtuosic technique on display continues to progress and amaze. It’s a masterful collection.

Revived Drew Friedman's Chosen People today in the mail and, as always, was blown away by Drew's work.The drawings of Shemp Howard of the Three Stooges alone is worth the book price. However I get personal favorites like Bob Denver, Tor Johnson, Gilbert Gottfried, Grandpa Al Lewis, and most importantly Bobby Barber!Will be on my coffee table for years and years to come! (Or at least until the next Drew Friedman book comes out)

First of all, why did Friedman include caricatures of Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders but not Donald Trump? I would have liked to see what Friedman's eye and hand did to Trump too. But faulting a book for something not in it is unfair. So that is only a minor quibble.More important, of all the Drew Friedman books devoted to portraits/caricatures, (_Too Soon_, Old Jewish Comedians_, Sideshow Freaks_, _Heroes of the Comics_), this one is by far the best in terms of variety of famous and not-so-famous subjects depicted. As such, it is the one Drew Friedman collection that truly displays his full range of talent in the unique visual style he perfected in recent years.But this is also the book produced with the smallest page measurements. All the other portrait books were formatted with larger pages. This book would have been an astonishing art book had it been produced in a larger format. It wouldn't even have needed to be "coffee table book" size. Something similar to the dimensions of all his other portrait books would have sufficed. This book is only 6.5 inches by 7.75 inches. Why is it so small? I would think such an important collection of artwork deserves a more impressive presentation. Rather than being an impressive art book, this one is kind of, well, maybe some would call it... cute.Don't get me wrong. This book is a great overview of the artist's recent work. But it's small...

A mix of editorial illustration and masterpieces created just for this book, Drew gives due to many unfamiliar faces who have been lost to all but the most devoted—the oft uncredited comic foil Bobby Barber, magician Jimmy Grippo, caricaturist Alex Gard, master cartoonist Bobby London, and of course, Shemp ... as well as many familiar faces you've come to love or hate. Drew never just illustrates. Each painting contains a revel of detail, which draws you back to his books again and again, and the deftness of his craft is such that the people he chooses look realer than real—these are personalities dragged out kicking and screaming from behind their facades. Enjoy.

Since I first encountered his work in the pages of Raw and Weirdo in the early 80s, I have been marveling at his work and how quickly it evolved from awesome to jaw-dropping to impossibly great, and then beyond even that. It's true!Now, in his latest collection "Drew Friedman's Chosen People", we get a splendid assortment of people from all walks of life -- though with an emphasis still on the entertainment biz -- in contrast to some of his previous books that focused on a specific theme, e.g. Old Jewish Comedians or Heroes of the Comics. Thus, the reader of this book will encounter Ernie Kovacs along with Steve Bannon, Frank Zappa along with Fanny Brice, Elaine May along with Ed Koch, the Marx Brothers along with Kathie Lee Gifford, Shemp Howard along with Muddy Waters, and on and on.Some of the portraits are obviously done with an immense affection for their subject, others are obviously done with the very opposite sentiment -- no matter, they're all magical.Now go buy the book. Don't be a procrastinator, do yourself a favor.

Author (Lee) delivers lessons in the physics of flight (thrust, drag, lift) as well as what type of paper to choose- lighter for smaller, faster planes; heavier paper for jumbo jets. Then he offers detailed folding instructions for aircraft from the most basic glider fifth graders might launch when the teacher's back is turned to twin-engine airliners to the most advanced fighter jets. I a using Mr. Lee's book as a workshop with High School Algebra 2 students. I have learned a lot about paper airplanes and the theory behind it. I am combining his book with grc.nansa.org website materials.

Got this as a gift for a seven year old along with an origami set (he's into origami and I thought this would be a cool variation). His mom said he loved it. They also said he needed help with some, as some.ofnthe desings can be complex.
