Review

“Original, accessible, and provocative….Tegmark successfully gives clarity to the many faces of AI, creating a highly readable book that complements The Second Machine Age’s economic perspective on the near-term implications of recent accomplishments in AI and the more detailed analysis of how we might get from where we are today to AGI and even the superhuman AI in Superintelligence…. At one point, Tegmark quotes Emerson: ‘Life is a journey, not a destination.’ The same may be said of the book itself. Enjoy the ride, and you will come out the other end with a greater appreciation of where people might take technology and themselves in the years ahead.” —Science“This is a compelling guide to the challenges and choices in our quest for a great future of life, intelligence and consciousness—on Earth and beyond.” —Elon Musk, Founder, CEO and CTO of SpaceX and co-founder and CEO of Tesla Motors“All of us—not only scientists, industrialists and generals—should ask ourselves what can we do now to improve the chances of reaping the benefits of future AI and avoiding the risks. This is the most important conversation of our time, and Tegmark’s thought-provoking book will help you join it.” —Professor Stephen Hawking, Director of Research, Cambridge Centre for Theoretical Cosmology “Tegmark’s new book is a deeply thoughtful guide to the most important conversation of our time, about how to create a benevolent future civilization as we merge our biological thinking with an even greater intelligence of our own creation.” —Ray Kurzweil, Inventor, Author and Futurist, author of The Singularity is Near and How to Create a Mind“Being an eminent physicist and the leader of the Future of Life Institute has given Max Tegmark a unique vantage point from which to give the reader an inside scoop on the most important issue of our time, in a way that is approachable without being dumbed down.” —Jaan Tallinn, co-founder of Skype   “This is an exhilarating book that will change the way we think about AI, intelligence, and the future of humanity.” —Bart Selman, Professor of Computer Science, Cornell University“The unprecedented power unleashed by artificial intelligence means the next decade could be humanity’s best—or worst.  Tegmark has written the most insightful and just plain fun exploration of AI’s implications that I’ve ever read. If you haven’t been exposed to Tegmark’s joyful mind yet, you’re in for a huge treat.” —Professor Erik Brynjolfsson, Director of the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy and co-author of The Second Machine Age“Tegmark seeks to facilitate a much wider conversation about what kind of future we, as a species, would want to create. Though the topics he covers—AI, cosmology, values, even the nature of conscious experience—can be fairly challenging, he presents them in an unintimidating manner that invites the reader to form her own opinions.” —Nick Bostrom, Founder of Oxford’s Future of Humanity Institute, author of Superintelligence"I was riveted by this book. The transformational consequences of AI may soon be upon us—but will they be utopian or catastrophic? The jury is out, but this enlightening, lively and accessible book by a distinguished scientist helps us to assess the odds." —Professor Martin Rees, Astronomer Royal, cosmology pioneer, author of Our Final Hour "In [Tegmark's] magnificent brain, each fact or idea appears to slip neatly into its appointed place like another little silver globe in an orrery the size of the universe. There are spaces for Kant, Cold War history and Dostoyevsky, for the behaviour of subatomic particles and the neuroscience of consciousness....Tegmark describes the present, near-future and distant possibilities of AI through a series of highly original thought experiments....Tegmark is not personally wedded to any of these ideas. He asks only that his readers make up their own minds. In the meantime, he has forged a remarkable consensus on the need for AI researchers to work on the mind-bogglingly complex task of building digital chains that are strong and durable enough to hold a superintelligent machine to our bidding....This is a rich and visionary book and everyone should read it." —The Times (UK)"Life 3.0 is far from the last word on AI and the future, but it provides a fascinating glimpse of the hard thinking required." —Stuart Russell, Nature  "Lucid and engaging, it has much to offer the general reader. Mr. Tegmark's explanation of how electronic circuitry–or a human brain–could produce something as evanescent and immaterial as thought is both elegant and enlightening. But the idea that machine-based superintelligence could somehow run amok is fiercely resisted by many computer scientists....Yet the notion enjoys more credence today than a few years ago, partly thanks to Mr. Tegmark.” —Wall Street Journal "Tegmark’s book, along with Nick Bostrom’s Superintelligence, stands out among the current books about our possible AI futures....Tegmark explains brilliantly many concepts in fields from computing to cosmology, writes with intellectual modesty and subtlety, does the reader the important service of defining his terms clearly, and rightly pays homage to the creative minds of science-fiction writers who were, of course, addressing these kinds of questions more than half a century ago. It’s often very funny, too." —The Telegraph (UK)“Exhilarating….MIT physicist Tegmark surveys advances in artificial intelligence such as self-driving cars and Jeopardy-winning software, but focuses on the looming prospect of “recursive self-improvement”—AI systems that build smarter versions of themselves at an accelerating pace until their intellects surpass ours. Tegmark’s smart, freewheeling discussion leads to fascinating speculations on AI-based civilizations spanning galaxies and eons….Engrossing.” —Publishers Weekly

The first chapter of Tegmark’s new book is called “Welcome to the most important conversation of our time,” and that’s exactly what this book is. Before diving into the book, a few words about why this conversation is so important and why Tegmark is a central agent helping make it happen and, through the book, the perfect guide.Have you notice how you don’t “solve” CAPTCHAs (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) anymore? That’s because computers now can. Artificial Intelligence, from being a fairly niche area of mostly academic study a decade ago has exploded in the last five years. Much more quickly than many anticipated, machine learning (a subset of AI) systems have defeated the best human Go players, are piloting self-driving cars, usefully if imperfectly translating documents, labeling your photos, understanding your speech, and so on. This has led to huge investment in AI by companies and governments, with every sign that progress will continue. This book is about what happens if and when it does. But why hear about it from Tegmark, an accomplished MIT physicists and cosmologist, rather than (say) an AI researcher? First, Tegmark has over the past few years *become* an AI researcher, with 5 published technical papers in the past two years. But he’s also got a lifetime of experience thinking carefully, rigorously, generally (and entertainingly to boot) about the “big picture” of what is possible, and what is not, over long timescales and cosmic distances (see his last book!) – which most AI researchers do not. Finally, he's played an active and very key role (as you can read about in the book’s epilogue) in actually creating conversation and research about the impacts and safety of AI in the long-term. I don’t think anyone is more comprehensively aware of the full spectrum of important aspects of the issue. So now the book. Chapter 1 lays out why AI is suddenly on everyone’s radar, and very likely to be extremely important over the coming decades, situating present-day as a crucial point within the wider sweep of human and evolutionary history on Earth. Chapter 2 takes the question of “what is intelligence?” and abstracts it from its customary human application, to “what is intelligence *in general*?” How can we define it in a useful way to cover both biological and artificial forms, and how do these tie to a basic understanding of the physical world? This lays the groundwork for the question of what happens as artificial intelligences grow ever more powerful. Chapter 3 addresses this question in the near future: what happens as more and more human jobs can be done by AIs? What about AI weapons replacing human-directed ones? How will be cope when more and more decision are made by AIs what may be flawed or biased? This is a about a lot of important changes occurring *right now* to which society is, for the most part, asleep at the wheel. Chapter 4 gets into what is exciting – and terrifying – about AI: as a designed intelligence, it can in principle *re*design itself to get better and better, potentially on a relatively short timescale. This raises a lot of rich, important, and extremely difficult questions that not that many people have thought through carefully (another in-print example is the excellent book by Bostrom). Chapter 5 discusses where what happens to humans as a species after an “intelligence explosion” takes place. Here Tegmark is making a call to start thinking about where we want to be, as we may end up somewhere sooner than we think, and some of the possibilities are pretty awful. Chapter 6 exhibits Tegmark’s unique talent for tackling the big questions, looking at the *ultimate* limits and promise of intelligent life in the universe, and how stupefyingly high the stakes might be fore getting the next few decades right. It’s both a sobering and an exhilerating prospect. Chapters 7 and 8 then dig into some of the deep and interesting questions about AI: what does it mean for a machine to have “goals”? What are our goals as individuals and a society, and how can we best aim toward them in the long term? Can a machine we design have consciousness? What is the long-term future of consciousness? Is there a danger of relapsing into a universe *without* consciousness if we aren’t careful? Finally, an epilogue describes Tegmark’s own experience – which I’ve had the privilege to personally witness – as a key player in an effort to focus thought and effort on AI and its long-term implications, of which writing this book is a part. (And I should also mention the prologue, which gives an fictional but less *science*fictional depiction of an artificial superintelligence being used by a small group to seize control of human society. The book is written in a very lively and engaging style. The explanations are clear, and Tegmark develops a lot of material at a level that is understandable to a general audience, but rigorous enough to give readers a real understanding of the issues relevant to thinking about the future impact of AI. There are a lot of news ideas in the book, and although it is sometimes written in a breezy and engaging style, that belies a lot of careful thinking about the issues. It’s possible that real, general artificial intelligence (AGI) is 100 or more years away, a problem for the next generation, with large but manageable effects of “narrow” AI to deal with over a span of decades. But it’s also quite possible that it’s going to happen 10, 15, 20, or 30 years from now, in which case society is going to have to make a lot of very wise and very important (literally of cosmic import) decisions very quickly. It’s important to start the conversation now, and there’s no better way.

While one cannot help being taken in by Tegmark's boundless enthusiasm, the book contains essentially no substantial content that I could extract. It may have some value in increasing general awareness about the dangers of AI, as well as providing an optimistic outlook for our technological future; and for those who are utterly unfamiliar with these sorts of ideas, it provides a gentle and entertaining introduction. I might recommend it to children interested in AI, and science/technology more generally, but for serious enthusiasts: don't waste your time, skip right to Bostrom's "Superintelligence" instead.

Max Tegmark, thank you for accomplishing the astounding feat of writing a book that will clearly delight and intrigue your fellow brainiacs, but that is also actually accessible to English majors like myself, intimidated by complex science. What an exhilarating ride!! The importance of understanding AI, the potential impact on humanity, is certainly not limited to physicists, so it is really a service to biological beings to make the subject (mostly) understandable. The topic also so quickly brings up the BIG questions . . . which continue to have no definitive answers but for which you've given us so much food for thought. I also greatly appreciated your playfulness, humility and awe. I have now purchased your book 7 times. First I downloaded the audiobook, but saw I was going to need pictures for this one and downloaded it to my Kindle. Then because with four other couples we have a monthly movie night (like a book club but with movies) and will watch "Her" at our next one, I sent copies to the other participants. This is going to be a loooooong conversation. So long in fact, that if you are reading this, I wonder if you would recommend other movies that intelligently explore this topic?

About James RollinsJAMES ROLLINS is a #1 New York Times bestselling author of international thrillers that have been translated into more than forty languages. Known for unveiling unseen worlds, scientific breakthroughs, and historical secrets, Rollins' knack for breakneck pacing and stunning originality has been hailed by critics and embraced by scores of millions of readers around the world. The Critics RaveThe New York Times says that his "roguish charm comes from his efforts to persuade readers the story is credible [through] real-life sources for his novel's science, history and geography." Rollins' rare blend of action, suspense, and knowledge was also mentioned by the Huffington Post, which stated that "After Crichton passed away in 2008 he clearly passed the baton to James Rollins, who like Crichton, is a renaissance man."NPR calls his work "adventurous and enormously engrossing..." and the New York Journal of Books had this to say: "If you're a fan of smart, entertaining adventure fiction, this is your summer beach read writ large....All the science, all the history, and all the locations are masterfully intertwined. The characters are multi-dimensional. And the story is, well, a corker."The Story Teller's StoryAs a boy immersed in the scientific adventures of Doc Savage, the wonders of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and pulps such as The Shadow, The Spider, and The Avenger, James Rollins decided he wanted to be a writer. He honed his storytelling skills early, spinning elaborate tales that were often at the heart of pranks played on his brothers and sisters. Before he would set heroes and villains on harrowing adventures, Rollins embarked on a career in veterinary medicine, graduating from the University of Missouri and establishing a successful veterinary practice. This hands-on knowledge of medicine and science helps shape the research and scientific speculation that set James Rollins books apart.Explosive Page-Turning AdventuresThe exotic locales of James Rollins novels have emerged as a hybrid between imagination, research, and his extensive travels throughout the United States and Europe, as well as New Zealand, the South Pacific, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. Recent jaunts include book tours and stops across the country and several European nations to give talks, seminars, and media interviews. In recent years, much of James' travel has involved meeting readers in small and large groups, at writing and fan conferences, and even aboard seagoing "seminars." James' mentoring and coaching skills have made him a sought after writing instructor and guest speaker for workshops, symposia, conventions, and other forums throughout the country.James Rollins is the author of nine thrillers in the bestselling Sigma Force series (Sandstorm, Map of Bones, Black Order, The Judas Strain, The Last Oracle, The Doomsday Key, The Devil Colony, Bloodline, and The Eye of God); six individual adventure thrillers; and the Jake Ransom middle grade series (Jake Ransom and the Skull King's Shadow, Jake Ransom and the Howling Sphinx.)

Imagine, if you will, that, some day in the future, a descendent of one of those men who persecuted witches of Salem, Massachusetts, has created a computer that can think and reason at such a skill that it is a million times smarter than the smartest human being. What good, or what evil, might that bring forth? In some oblique way, this book strikes me as a not so far-fetched version of a sequel to Stephen King’s ‘The Stand.’ By that I do not mean to state that this features the same sort of characters or plot as my favorite work by the master of horror. Rather, this is a fantasy based upon facts, history and a conjecture about where humanity is headed due to the advances in artificial intelligence.Of course, the actual reality that will come will be wildly different from that imagined by this author, so it may be unwise to fear the future. But, this book takes such a penetrating look at our past that, were it not for the history we did preserve, there are precious few who could have seriously imagined that what our forefathers did do would ever have actually happened. I, for one, will never again look at witchcraft quite the same way I did before cracking open this superb novel.Further, I will never again make snide comments regarding faith healers or ‘good witches.’ It was not merely the novel that has opened my eyes, but it is the information provided by Rollins as an introduction, and as an explanation following the fictional story. Bravo! Now, on with my review…POV: Third person. But, if I dare say, the writer has the main character’s thoughts for us placed in italics, so, one could state that first person is sprinkled into the third person narrative, making for a more compelling and more dynamic novel.BLUSH FACTOR: To be sure, there are a few eff-words. Only six when I checked using the search option. I know a few will shy away from this novel, but, honestly, I don’t recommend that. The story content is just simply too compelling.WRITING & EDITING: Professional as would be expected with the higher list price for a Kindle Edition. I recommend also getting the Audible edition, as it is a first-rate production narrated by Christian Baskous brings all the greatest essence of the writing forward for us to contemplate. This Action-Adventure will dare you to reconsider humanity’s place. In fact, it will have you reconsidering a great deal more than that, but only if you actually read it or listen to the Audible Edition.CLIFFHANGER ENDING: No, but he seems to have left the door open for a sequel. PLEASE, bring us another novel with this premise.Excerpt:‘…Bearing silent witness from the computer lab, Mara had heard the alarming words of the man who led the attack: Xénese must never be. It is an abomination, born of sorcery and filth.Breathing hard, she stared over to the second black case on the floor. It lay open, its inner padding cradling a sphere that Carly jokingly called the soccer ball. It was not a bad analogy. The device was indeed the size of a regulation ball. Similarly, hexagonal plates covered its surface. But rather than made up of stitched leather, the device consisted of alternating hexagonal plates of titanium and diamond-hard sapphire crystal. In a moment of hubris, she had named the device Xénese, the Galician word for Genesis.Still, the name fit, considering her goal.To bring forth life from the cold vacuum of nothingness. Was it any wonder such an ambition attracted the wrong attention? She again pictured the attackers’ robes and blindfolds, heard their justification for murder, ripped from the Bible: Suffer not a witch to live.Anger steadied her hand. Charlotte and the others died because of Mara’s work, but she would not let their deaths be in vain. Determination spread through her. Up until now, she had been running scared, overwhelmed by grief. But she was done running. Only now did she feel secure enough to check on the status of her work. Still, a final worry remained. In her panicked haste to extract Xénese and its hard drives from the university’s Milipeia Cluster, she worried she may have irreparably damaged the program.Please. It’s Christmas morning. Grant me this one gift.Over the next hour, she daisy-chained the drives encoded with her program modules into her laptop. She checked each one and sighed with relief when everything seemed intact. Next, she powered up what Carly called “the soccer ball.” As electricity flowed through a conditioner into the device, its tiny sapphire windows brightened with an azure glow, marking the successful ignition of the tiny lasers inside.“Let there be light,” she whispered with a sad smile, remembering how often Dr. Carson had used that line from the Book of Genesis—and her mentor’s warning the day before their test run.Rollins, James. Crucible (Sigma Force Novels) . William Morrow. Kindle Edition.BOTTOM LINEThe author, in an afterword, claims there is more truth than fiction in this book. What is scary, for me, is that he may be correct. Although I do frequently read this author’s works, I’ve never really placed him so highly on my list of favorite writers. Until now. This is THAT enjoyable and stimulating. I only wish Rollins had kept this story going on for another thousand pages. No worry, I do expect a sequel…Five stars out of five. Well, actually 4-1/2, as it is too short.

For once, I can agree with the blurb for this novel. Normally the blurb does not describe the text accurately for me. This was spot on and it is a heart pounding novel of intense action, a historical mystery dating back to the Spanish Inquisition and science concerning Artificial Intelligence. The medieval text 'The Hammer of Witches' (1487) is delineated in depth and the reader is introduced to the world of witchcraft. For me, my knowledge was negligible until I read these portions. The action throughout is intense and does not stop from the beginning until the end. My advice is to buckle up your seat belt and hang on for the ride....The Artificial Intelligence portion of the novel is indeed mind boggling. I fear that we are almost there. I had never heard of the AI Eurisko previously nor his inventor Lenat. This was ten years ago and I can only imagine how far this science has advanced in a decade.Sigma Force certainly had a mystery on their hands and Commander Grey Pierce rises to the occasion with the team. Loved Mara and her contributions to the science portion. Wow, just wow.....The entire novel is incredible and the plot is well defined. In addition, the characters were fleshed out well My goodness, what a ride for me on a bitterly cold day in Vermont.Just superlative writing and am looking forward to others written by this author. Most highly recommended.

I’ve been reading Rollins for years. This book, however, knocked everything he’s ever published right out of the park. Imagine if artificial intelligence was so sophisticated it could literally learn what we do in a lifetime in just seconds. And what if that AI was put in the wrong hands? In this case, it’s a group that descends from a secret society of witch hunters who use Malleus Maleficarum (the Hammer of Witches) as their Bible. FYI: It’s a real book. To them AI is the new witchcraft. It starts out with quite the bang as Monk and Gray’s world is ripped out from under them in a very personal way. Then a genius girl who developed a powerful AI is targeted after a massacre takes place. I don’t want to get into too many details, here. But I do not normally go for artificial intelligence type stuff. I slept through I-Robot and had no interest in other movies of the same genre. This, though, gripped me from beginning to end. Never did I expect to be cheering on a digital intelligence. But I was. Just a terrific book.

I automatically order every Rollins novel to be delivered to my Kindle upon publication. One more of this caliber and I will require a sample first. While the premise was intriguing, the excess repetition rapidly became boring and the conclusion obvious. I understand the convention he was using in the development of Eve's intelligence, but a couple of examples would have sufficed.Oh well, an occasional disappointment is inevitable. This is the first of his novels not to rate five stars from me so he is still on auto delivery for now.

4 * (Rounded up from 3.5)I've read all of Rollins' books and enjoy the characters of his Sigma Force novels. But this one didn't live up to my expectations.I always appreciate the science that Rollins brings to his work, but (in my opinion) it overwhelms the realism of his storyline in Crucible. (I realize that the book is about AI—artificial intelligence—gone awry, but this is FICTION, so I want a STORY.) The chapters in which he relates Eve's thinking (Eve is the AI persona) distracted me from the characters that attract me to his books in the first place. It's almost as if Rollins is using these AI chapters as a glue to bind the rocking thriller scenes instead of trying to develop the story. It's not that Crucible is a BAD Sigma Force novel, but it disappointed me. I'll read the next installment in this series, hoping that it's full of more humanity, and less scientific razzle-dazzle.

This handbook, by Robert Holmstedt, is essentially a syntactic commentary on the Hebrew text of Ruth. This makes it an extremely valuable resource for the budding Hebrew student as it fills a gap between introductory textbooks and the sometimes daunting intermediate/advanced grammars. Holmstedt's commentary walks the student through each verse explaining everything from parsings to word-order choices. Additionally, Holmstedt is one of the very few Hebrew scholars who apply generative linguistics to Biblical Hebrew. As a result of this methodology he takes some syntactic stances that will be puzzling to many Hebrew students and scholars alike—most notable is his insistence that Hebrew is a SVO language, but that there is nearly always something to "mark" a clause and elevate the V over the S. Helpfully, Holmstedt provides a fairly thorough and technical essay on this as part of the introduction. Throughout the text of the commentary this issue causes zero confusion, because all scholars note deviations from the "normal" word pattern for emphasis, change of speaker, etc... Rather, Holmstedt's linguistic views have rendered a fresh commentary that uses language which is sensible and up-to-date to speak about how Hebrew works. I often found Holmstedt's discussions to be illuminating and clear. He is especially good when he uses syntax to weigh in (albeit briefly) on interpretive issues in the book, e.g. what did or didn't Boaz and Ruth do on the threshing floor? Finally, as alluded to above, Holmstedt provided a substantial amount of introductory material to this handbook. These brief essays are helpful in setting up his approach, introducing a beginning student to some of the exciting conversations in Hebrew linguistics, and providing an entryway into the work of one of the top (and youngest) Hebrew scholars working today. Five starts because this book is a book with a job to do and it does it well.

To maintain and improve my Hebrew after seminary, one of my professors recommended that I work through this volume. I have 20 pages left, and the journey has been invaluable. Holmstedt's analysis of Ruth's syntax has, I feel, given me a better grasp of the language and greater confidence/capability in reading Hebrew.I recommend it to all, especially to those who worked through Jonah in seminary and are looking for a place to continue. I look forward to going through his analysis of Esther (and later Ecclesiasties), also in this series.

This was a helpful book, and I would recommend it to anyone with some decent Hebrew who wants to understand better. It won't be enough by itself, but it will certainly be a worthy contributer to your study.

Great book. Used it for my Beginners/Intermediate Summer Language Program at Harvard.

Every verb is parsed, every construction is explained. Don't expect much exegetical depth and you won't be disappointed. Nice complement to other commentaries, but I wouldn't make it my only commentary of Ruth

Beautiful, clean Hebrew font here! I often fear purchasing OT technical works in Kindle because in some works, the Hebrew font cannot be re-sized along with the English text, and/or the Hebrew text has such poor resolution that even when enlarged it is almost unreadable. No such problem here.I cannot wait to take my intermediate Hebrew-reading skills to the next level, after I finish the Hebrew Exegesis course I am taking online right now. Looks like I have found the perfect guidebook to help me continue with profitable self-study when I begin translating through the book of Ruth.

This book was required for my class in Hebrew Exegesis. The author is an astute grammarian so some of the material was difficult for my comprehension.

The item was as described. The price was great. It arrived shortly. A very interesting read.
