About the Author

Reuben Archer Torrey (1856-1928), was an American evangelist, pastor, educator, and writer. Torrey joined Dwight L. Moody in his evangelistic work in Chicago in 1889, and became superintendent of the Bible Institute of the Chicago Evangelization Society (now Moody Bible Institute). Five years later, he became pastor of the Chicago Avenue Church (now The Moody Church) in 1894. In 1898, Torrey served as a chaplain with the YMCA at Camp Chicamauga during the Spanish-American War. Later, during World War I, he performed similar service at Camp Bowie (a POW camp in Texas) and Camp Kearny. In 1902–1903, he preached in nearly every part of the English-speaking world and with song leader Charles McCallon Alexander conducted revival services in Great Britain from 1903 to 1905. During this period, he also visited China, Japan, Australia, and India. Torrey conducted a similar campaign in American and Canadian cities in 1906–1907. Throughout these campaigns, Torrey utilized a meeting style that he borrowed from Moody's campaigns of the 1870s. In 1907, he accepted an honorary doctorate from Wheaton College. In 1912, Torrey was persuaded to build another institution like Moody Bible Institute, and from 1912 to 1924, he served as Dean of Bible Institute of Los Angeles (now Biola University), also contributing to the BIOLA publication, The King's Business. In 1915, he also served as pastor of the Church of the Open Door, Los Angeles. Torrey was one of the three editors of The Fundamentals, the twelve-volume series that lent its name to what came to be called "fundamentalism". His last evangelistic meeting was in Florida in 1927. Future planned meetings were canceled because of his failing health. He died at home in Asheville, North Carolina, on October 26, 1928, having preached the world over and having left a legacy of over forty books. Torrey Auditorium, for decades the main auditorium at Moody Bible Institute, was named for him. At Biola, the Torrey Honors Institute honors him, as does the university's annual Bible conference.

Yes, I got out the tape measure and the text height is just shy of one and a half millimeters. Couldn't read it even with my glasses on. This review is not for the book itself, just the printing of it as I am unable to read it and have no idea if the book is good. I received it today, saw the font and immediately went into Amazon and got a refund. That was easy, they were cool about it. I just ordered the large print edition, so we will see what that looks like in a few days when it comes. Just wanted to let everybody who needs more than 1.5 millimeter size text know the deal.Just FYI, the reviews for both the large print and that tiny one are the same. So if you are looking at the one with his picture on the front, that is the tiny print one and if you click on reviews you will see this. But if you are looking at a blue book with a white dove on it that says large print edition and click on reviews you will also be brought to these same reviews and be confused when you see people saying that the text is too small to read when you are looking up reviews on a large print edition.

Some of the more favorable quotes from this entry include:"...the Holy Spirit is not a power that we get hold of and use according to our will but a Person of sovereign majesty, who uses us according to His will. This distinction is of fundamental importance in our getting into right relations with the Holy Spirit.""...what a holy joy must come into our hearts when we grasp the thought that there is a Divine Person, One who never errs, who is willing to take possession of us and impart to us such gifts as He sees best and to use us according to His wise and loving will....He is a holy Person who comes to dwell in our hearts, One who sees clearly every act we perform, every word we speak, every thought we entertain, even the most fleeting fancy that is allowed to pass through our minds; and if there is anything in act, or word or deed that is impure, unholy, unkind, selfish, mean, petty or untrue, this infinitely holy One is deeply grieved by it...the Holy Spirit is not merely an influence that moves us to pray, not merely an illumination that teaches us how to pray, but a Person who Himself prays in and through us.""If words mean anything, and certainly in the Bible they mean what they say, there can be no mistaking it, that the Father and the Son and the Spirit are three distinct and separate Persons.""In the account of the creation and the rehabilitation of this world to be the abode of man, Father, Word and Holy Spirit are all mentioned (Gen. i. 1-3). It is evident from a comparison of these passages that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are all active in the creative work. The Father works in His Son, through His Spirit. Not only is the original creation of the material universe attributed to the agency of the Holy Spirit in the Bible but the maintenance of living creatures as well.""The one thing that the eternal God demands of men is that they believe on Him whom He hath sent (John vi. 29). And the one sin that reveals men's rebellion against God and daring defiance of Him is the sin of not believing on Jesus Christ, and this is the one sin that the Holy Spirit puts to the front and emphasizes and of which He convicts men.""It is only through the testimony of the Holy Spirit directly to our hearts that we ever come to a true, living knowledge of Jesus Christ (cf. 1 Cor. xii. 3). No amount of mere reading the written Word (in the Bible) and no amount of listening to man's testimony will ever bring us to a living knowledge of Christ. It is only when the Holy Spirit Himself takes the written Word, or takes the testimony of our fellow man, and interprets it directly to our hearts that we really come to see and know Jesus as He is.""the Word is the instrument used in regeneration, but it is only as the Holy Spirit uses the instrument that the new birth results....No number of Bibles upon our tables or in our libraries will save us, but the truth of the Bible written by the Spirit of the living God in our hearts will save us."It seems to me that the thrust of this entry would be more agreeable to those who hold to Neo-Pentecostal theology (e.g., Chapter XX) rather than to Calvinistic theology. Those of Calvinistic thinking would more likely profit from The Mystery of the Holy Spirit by R C Sproul (which is also available in the Kindle format.)

When you read this book, you will no doubt go down on your knees and worship God. You will be assured that God keeps his promise to "never leave us nor forsake us" because He gave us the Holy Spirit. If you are ever in doubt as to the truth of anything you read in the Bible, you can be sure that the Holy Spirit is willing and able to "guide you into all truth."This book assures us as well as gives a practical guideline on how to know if the promptings in our heart really do come from the Holy Spirit or they are just our own notions (or worse, signs of a mental disease or demon possession). More than ever, when there are so many voices out there clamoring for our attention, we as children of God need to know how to be "led by the Spirit of God." When so many hardships assault us in our daily life, it is good to know that God has given us a Comforter who "runs alongside us" even when the road is dark and difficult. If you need encouragement in your daily Christian life, this book will surely be of help.

The Kindle version of this book gets four stars for its clarity of the subject at hand. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone coming from a Christian (Protestant) community or organization as I have who never was able to fully grasp from church preachings what it is the Holy Spirit is or can do for you. It's easy to miss the importance of seeking the Holy Spirit in prayer just from hearing it talked about over the pulpit. This book teaches me more than any sermon ever has on this topic. It encouraged me to pray more, but not only to pray, but to pray with more understanding of why I'm praying and what I should be praying for. While this is a pretty easy to understand read, I suggest taking it one or two chapters at a time and reflect on what you've read. Read any scriptures that are referred to so you can get a clearer picture of what is being discussed. I personally have been enlightened so much by this book. A lot of my questions were answered about the works of the Spirit within us. I'd read scripture and understand what was being said, but I rarely would connect the dots in the Bible concerning the Holy Spirit. I thank the Lord for the understanding that I have received from this book.

The Holy Spirit is one of the most important persons to know. He is a gift and many Christians would do well by knowing who He is and how He operations with humans. R.A. Torrey does an excellent job on making that introduction and helping understand the operations and gifts of the Holy Spirit. The reading is not extremely difficult, but one cannot simply breeze through this work. It causes one to pause and assess old beliefs regarding this Wonderful Person, whom we know as the Spirit of the Living God.I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a deeper spiritual experience with the Living God of Creation.
