I got a lot out of Johnsen’s previous book, “Heaven is a Garden,” so I must say that I had high expectations for “The Spirit of Stone.” My initial reaction is that I wish she had finished it sooner. I completed several design contracts last year that involved extensive stone work, and there is information in this book that would have helped each of them.Johnsen’s greatest talents as a designer are her ability to immediately recognize the innate purpose of a given space and her incomparable vocabulary of various design elements, both living and innate. And every one of her designs that I have visited features exceptional stonework. But what makes her an incredibly successful practicing designer is her ability to explain form and function in ways that the uninitiated can easily grasp. All of these are products of decades of experience and a deep seated passion for garden design as an art form. They are also what make her classes and lectures so popular with those looking at a career in landscape design. And with those who just want to make sense of their own back yard. I would recommend “The Spirit of Stone” to either group.I related to Johnsen speaking of “having a soft spot for hard rock.” So do I. Her latest book is packed with information -practical, informative, and sometimes just interesting. From detailing the pros and cons of various types of stone and gravel materials, to new suggestions on how to use them, to fascinating asides on specific individual or famous stones and the work of world-class artists and designers, her passion for the subject matter is contagious. Hundreds of beautiful photos (a fair percentage from her own work), charts and diagrams shed further light on each topic. I have no doubt that after reading this I will be using more stone in my own design practice. After reading this book, you will too. It’s that good. It’s that comprehensive. It’s that fun to read. And, if you love working with stone in the garden –or if you’d like to –it’s the ideal handbook on the subject.

I can easily find great books about plants, but I have been waiting for a comprehensive book about stone and how to use it in landscapes for many years. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to craft a memorable, magical and spiritual garden.

If you're looking for a how-to book, this is not it. If you're looking for a stunningly beautiful book, full of great ideas, logically grouped, with knowledgeable, well written advice and background, then this definitely is it. The lack of the fifth star is because I was expecting a how-to, which is my fault, not the authors. But who says life is fair?

Can a book have too many 5 stars? I'm with everyone else, this is a very wonderful book. I've gleaned many ideas for a garden remodel. Stone can be boring sometimes but this book shifts us from that paradigm to creative and inspiring.

A very thorough book to learn Spanish with.

I used it to study Spanish, and then several years later, used it to teach Spanish, and it is the best textbook that I have found. I have tried other popular High School textbooks, but I am back to this one. Organized, interesting, and easy to understand. Though it is not as advanced as some other textbooks, if you learn this one well, you are well on the way in your journey to learn Spanish as a second language. Ive seen them stacked like that before but they usually each have their own envelope.The problem with this is it was difficult to remove a cd without getting your fingerprints on them and what do you do with Cd #1 when your trying to get to CD#2Is this a reason not to buy the collection No I have some spare envelopes for the Cds But this was disappointing I just didnt think this was a sign of the best careBut they are good shows and I will buy again from this company Radio Spirits like I have in the past

What a disappointment. I have gotten this calendar for the last 5 years and love it. In fact, I have all 5 on my bookshelves, the day itself may be wrong but the date is correct. The photos are wonderful and the plastic holder is handy. But the new one- the photos are smaller and printed only on one side because each page is torn off every day. So what are you suppose to do with all these loose sheets. I guess I could write my grocery list on the back of the Burrowing Owl. Very unhappy with the new format. Bring back the plastic holder to keep the days in order. I am returning the calendar for a refund

Don't like the change in format. Went from a very nice clear plastic holder, 6" x 7" picture on thick stock - to a rip-off-a-page-a-day format (like all the others) that is now 5.5" x 5.5" and printed on thin stock. The pictures from the earlier years are collectables - these are just going to be thrown away. Sad that Audubon made the format change. I hope lots of people complain.

Bought the Art Page-a-Day calendar for my wife this year. She was disappointed in many of the images so back to her favorite - the Bird Page-a- Day, which I've bought her for several years. Images are smaller than before & like other reviewers I do not like the new format - bring back the plastic holder!

Disappointed. I was so looking forward to the 2018 Bird calendar from Gallery, and I received this. The pictures are nothing like those of past years. They have also cancelled the Flower calendar. This will be my last year of ordering unless they return to the old format.

Do not like the new product. Audubon changed it from beautiful large pictures to smaller pictures and it is like every other page a day calendar. If I would have wanted a page a day ( where your tear off each day) I would have bought one. This calendar is like any other calendar, their other calendars were beautiful and different. Sorry I bought it, I like birds. Bring back the other format.

I join all other reviewers. I HATE the format change. I have faithfully bought this calendar for the last five years. I've gifted it. It was such a beautiful gift, and I even gifted additional gallery style calendars to my friends/family as a result.What an utter disappointment to see the quality of the Audubon Birds calendar decrease. I will not buy this calendar. I enjoyed the better quality, collectible, gallery style version. I would rather pay additional fee for that style than purchase this cheapened version. Boo :(

OK, full disclosure: I have not actually BOUGHT the new format, but from what I am reading, and what I have heard from my personal correspondence with the PR person at Workman, yes, the paper quality is cheaper and the format smaller. For us artists and birders who get tremendous joy and inspiration out of the old format, this is a huge bummer. Those photos were framable. Now, they are basically a disposable, colored grocery list. Sure, there will be some images of great birds, but the "specialness" is gone, all because of wanting a bigger profit. My idea was to keep the old format, charge MORE, maybe even double it; the hardcore bird lovers and artists will gladly pay. Did you SEE that the 2016 Bird calendar was being offered for over $2,038.00 on Amazon?!?! What does that SAY? MAYBE the Cats, Dogs, Trees, and Horses calendars could be downgraded to the rip-a-page off format on lesser paper. That would preserve profit without sending us Bird Freaks into despair. I just think birders are more...picky in their bird art. I could be wrong. But I won't be buying it again. Sad.

This calendar used to be an elegant and attractive way to display nature's beauty that could be enjoyed year after year. Now it looks cheap, with a tacky YELLOW plastic stand instead of the former clear acrylic, inferior paper, and smaller format photos, plus it is made to be wastefully disposable. I'd rather pay more for the original version of this calendar than buy this one. The one sent to me had obviously been returned by a disappointed customer.

My nieces have taken an interest in yoga like their Auntie and I wanted to find them a book that is age appropriate. This books really offers everything I'd want in beginner book of yoga for a "tween" girls. I wish there was a bit more step by step in there regarding the postures, but the book also discusses self-confidence, being kind to ourselves and others and the other practices of a well rounded yoga practice.

I purchased this book for my 9 year old niece & she loved it. She looked through it several times before her first yoga class, with myself & her Mom in tow. She loved the class and I believe the book helped her understand what would be happening. This isn't meant to be a be all end all yoga book but rather a very nicely done introduction.

I enjoyed reading this book after I started yoga as an adult. My sister's granddaughter loaned it to me. Easy and informative for any little yoga person.

I had read other books in this series and loved them so I'm buying as many titles as I can find. This book was easy to read and beautiful to look at and it's a wonderful addition to my children's library as well as useful even for me. I'm a beginning yogini and this book gave me a good, simple start.

I am an elementary teacher and I bought this book for my students. It never stays on the shelf for long. It is well loved with many dog-eared pages.

This book is an excellent one for teens and tweens who are brand-new to yoga. It gives a nice overview, though very high-level, as to what yoga is all about and weaves in quotes from real girls who have discovered the wonderful benefits of yoga. If you're interested in a complete physical practice, with details on the poses and modifications, this book is not the one for you. But it does give several small sequences that you can incorporate into each day that don't take up too much of your time.

I LOVE this book! The language is spot-on for girls--there's no "dumbing down" here, yet the core teachings of yoga aren't glossed over either. The package is tons of fun, with amazing, colourful illustrations of real girls and easy-to-follow instructions for each yoga pose. I highly recommend it--especially for girls who might want to begin a yoga practice but aren't sure they want to take a class with a "bunch of women."If you're a mom with a preteen / teenage daughter, it's a great way to learn about yoga together.
