This book is small but mighty. I learned so much about how to live with my spouse's alcoholism. It completely changed my perspective and I am living a much more peaceful life.

The different perspectives helped me through a different time with my alcoholic. Highly recommend this and attending meetings.

****This book is excellent for marriages when one of the partners is an alcoholic; it is also good for codependent marriages in general. Much of the book would apply to marriages where a partner is abusive, even if not alcoholic. The advice and illustrations are hands-on and useful. The book is about a hundred pages and very dated; however, the information is still valuable and well worth the price.I have my copy highlighted throughout. Here is a sample quote:"To see this situation realistically, she would have to understand how desperately the guilt-tormented alcoholic needs such weapons to bolster his own ego. When he uses these weapons to attack, it is not because he hates his wife but because he hates himself and needs to reassure himself that he is not all bad. He finds fault with the person nearest to him because it makes it a little easier for him to tolerate himself."This book is a useful support to the spouse of an alcoholic, reflecting the Al-Anon philosophy and general good common sense, which is sometimes overlooked by the partner in the throes of chaos generated by living with an alcoholic/abusive partner. This book was written by and for members of the Al-Anon family groups, but a wonderful perspective and approach to communication and team work in any marriage. Given that our US society's divorce rate is well-over 50% of all marriages, we who are in marriages or committed relationships could all benefit from the ideas presented here. A short, concise, well-written approach that is very well explained.

This book is a good start. I highly recommend reading this. It's very small but hits what seem like the most critical topics. It won't solve all your problems, but it will transition your way of thinking so that you can begin a healthy transformation.

As all literature from Al-anon, this book is sympathetic to the dilemma of the codependent spouse dealing with an alcoholic/addict, but it gives much more than sympathy. It is also very firm in telling us what we need to do to put the focus on taking care of ourselves no matter what the spouse is doing. The book is a quick read that should be referred to again and again, especially by a beginner. It is also a must read for those of us who grew up in alcoholic family systems and who have married other addictive and compulsive types, such as workaholics, food addicts, ragers, compulsive spenders, gamblers, sex addicts, etc. This book can be an eye-opener for those that feel they would be perfectly happy if their spouses were not using or drinking, because the book constantly reinforces that recovery has to start with us first, no matter what our spouses might be doing.

This is an awesome educational book. Gives perspectives on YL and on many other sources in the field of E.O.'s as well as educates you on Essential Oils. Be prepared it is very educational, meaning it can get a little snoozish. But it is a Chemistry book which anyone and everyone can understand. If you aren't that interested in all the bits and pieces of this science and field maybe not the book for you. I however love it, even if I have to have coffee while reading some portions :) A great educational tool for anyone working in the field, going into the field, or wanting to educate themselves for their own personal health reasons. It is a awesome find. I was so happy to receive it for the Amazon price!

Chemistry was my primary passion for 14 years of my life, including conducting graduate research in neurochemistry, but I almost didn't buy this book because of one of the reviewers saying that it was "replete with errors".But the book has so many great reviews I decided to take a chance on it, even though I already own a large collection of excellent aromatherapy books. Boy am I glad I did!The book is superb!The nit-picking reviewer who criticized it really doesn't know that they're talking about, the vast majority of the content is rock-solid.And the book is entertaining, informative, and has superb and extensive tables of detailed information that one can't find anywhere else.Priceless.

Written by a chemistry teacher who became an expert on essential oils, I have read through this book three or four times. The use of these oils extends far far beyond something that smell good, and can be used to revitalize and help heal the body. Makes sense, since that's what they do in plants, and they also work incredible well in us humans, if we know how to use them. Very highly recommended book for understanding how these oils actually work in our own bodies.

Overwhelming, devastating, so incredibly moving. I cannot do a review that would be enough. Five stars are certainly not enough! I highly recommend the Audible version which really brings it alive with Bahni Tirpin’s passionate, sympathetic voice and consistently authentic-sounding accents.Other reviewers have put significant time and effort into outlining thoughts on the storyline and characters. I’ll just say I had goosebumps, over and over, while listening to this epic family saga and the horrifying fall out of slavery-colonization-revolution and I do not cry easily but got choked up several times toward the end.I am not much of a nonfiction reader. I learn best through fiction. I have worked side by side with Liberian immigrants and clients. I knew nothing of the history they were affected by and forced to come to the US. I didn’t ask many questions because I sensed it was an uneasy topic. Also, my work is with clients with mental illness so I am seeing many reactions to trauma. I have sometimes listened to stories of children and grandchildren who have achieved extreme success but I’ve seldom heard stories of difficult or disconnected children because why would I? Immigrant parents do not suffer for themselves, they suffer for their children. And a child who fails to be a model immigrant has to be too painful to discuss outside the family. That’s the beauty of fiction. It gives us access to experience that is rarely articulated in a multidimensional way.If you, like me, know little to nothing about Liberia you can check Wikipedia before reading. The links inside the articles led me to information that I found helpful. But also keep in mind that no one work if fiction can cover the ethnic diversity of the Liberian people and certainly not the diversity of lived experience.Gibney writes with so much compassion for every character and the book surely has a universal message. I hope many many young adult readers will be exposed to it because it can potentially build bridges and humanize every “other” in our lives. It’s also a great model for finding ways to bring parts of ourselves together by honoring our own histories, both known and forgotten. For that reason, I gave my son’s 10th grade teacher (who happens to be Somali-American) this book, as well as See No Color by the same author, in hopes that she might add them to her curriculum. Anyone who can afford to do something like this-please do!

I love this book. We start in a 21st century Minneapolis high school and wind up exploring 18th century Virginia; early 20th century Liberia and back again to the Midwest of "now," but not quite to the same space; it's a spiral, to use one of the book's key metaphors. Would we be better if we understood the threads of our history--the way we are tied to pasts we cannot touch; the way old conflicts can suddenly replay and reverse themselves and play out again, but not quite the same? This book kept surprising me and kept being beautiful and feeling true. Part of that is a mystery of art and the writer's craft--the intuitiveness that great writers stay open to, but which they can't scrutinize too closely or the magic could go. But the other part of this book's power comes from the writer's long, deep decade-long dive into deeply challenging historical times and spaces, both here in the US and in Liberia; listening hardest to the voices of people who feel the least at home in the spaces they wound up in. One of the best books I've read.

A great inside look at a great man. "An Army Of One" is an appropriate title but the reality is that Mr. Limbaugh is commander in chief for all of us conservatives. I am a child of the 60's and still believe that government is sticking it's nose too far into my business and everyone else life.

I've always been interested in Rush. Zev's book is an excellent analysis of Rush's life. Zev did his homework. He wrote about what he learned. Spending a great deal of time interviewing people including Rush, his family and friends and associates. I believe this is a more than fair assessment. it is certainly not a white wash. I enjoyed the read. This is a book that would be helpful to those who know nothing about Rush, and never listen to him, but have a poor opinion. Truth is a powerful tool.

Great book to know more of our beloved Rush. We still love him...Read it.

I've always liked Rush but no one had really written a book about his life. This book takes me on a journey of his life from his early childhood through his radio success. A most enjoyable read, especially for those who are Rush fans.

This is a very honest and fair depiction of Rush Limbaugh. The author does not suck up to Limbaugh, nor does he attempt to diminish him. Zev Chafets simply gives an honest evaluation of Rush Limbaugh's life. Politics aside (or not), it's a fascinating read.

I read this well-written and enjoyable book on my Kindle. Why? Because recently I read Chafets bio of Roger Ailes and was so riveted that I want to read more of his commentary on well-known Americans who help steer the politics in America. Based on brilliant research and face to face interviews, the author manages to look deep into Rush Limbaugh's past, present and future outlook for this country and why so many people either love him or hate him. He travels with Rush, visits his Florida home and his workplace, meets his staff and many of his friends, and also reports on Rush's missteps. No holds barred that I could discover.It's all here - Rush Limbaugh's childhood, education (or lack thereof), his friends and enemies, how he conducts his radio program, his personal and private life - all written by Chafets with sincerity and amazement! I am not a "dittohead" but I know many who are and it is impossible to have a civil conversation with them! Now I can recommend this sensible biography of a man who remains a staunch conservative and manages to greatly affect public opinion three hours daily on AM radio, all the while driving democrats and liberals crazy. Find out who his friends are and why he is so popular despite the rhetoric.Does Rush Limbaugh speak to you? Why? Here is a book to make you think about how government is run and you won't have to listen to the radio program and get depressed. IF only we had more on each page about their childhoods!!! Wonderful artistic illustrations about each DIVA! I love the colors!

Leslie Gourse has written a fabulous introduction to the great female jazz singers.She's included Ella Fitzgerald (of course!), Bessie Smith and a host of others including currently popular singers like Diana Krall. Ms. Gourse is an excellent researcher and writer, and this book should be included in all school libraries.Highly recommended
