Being and Time: A Revised Edition of the Stambaugh Translation (SUNY series in Contemporary Continental Philosophy), by Martin Heidegger

Review

"Stambaugh's new version has large virtues, and improves on the only alternative ... [It] is best suited to beginning or general audiences ... These will find its spare and unobtrusive apparatus, which lets the text stand out more simply on its own and not bristling with flagged complications, a decisive virtue ... As a supplement or for comparison, or as a vehicle for reacquainting oneself with the work, it gives excellent service." --TLS"This new translation ... offers the text in a more precise and understandable English than earlier editions." -- Library Journal --Library Journal"Stambaugh's greatest merit as a translator is her ability to render the most difficult of Heidegger's prose ... into an English that remains both elegant and as faithful as possible to the original ... The bilingual glossary and index in the back are marvelously helpful ... Any translation of Sein und Zeit cannot help being a welcome contribution, even a significant landmark, within the world of Heidegger scholarship." --MLN

From the Back Cover

The publication in 1927 of Martin Heidegger's magnum opus signaled an intellectual event of the first order and had an impact in fields far beyond that of philosophy proper. Being and Time has long been recognized as a landmark work of the twentieth century for its original analyses of the character of philosophic inquiry and the relation of the possibility of such inquiry to the human situation. Still provocative and much disputed, Heidegger's text has been taken as the inspiration for a variety of innovative movements in fields ranging from psychoanalysis, literary theory, and existentialism to ethics, hermeneutics, and theology. A work that disturbs the traditions of philosophizing that it inherits, Being and Time raises questions about the end of philosophy and the possibilities for thinking liberated from the presumptions of metaphysics. The Stambaugh translation captures the vitality of the language and thinking animating Heidegger's original text. It is also the most comprehensive edition insofar as it includes the marginal notes made by Heidegger in his own copy of Being and Time, and takes into account the many changes that he made in the final German edition of 1976. The revisions to the original translation correct ambiguities and problems that have become apparent since the translation first appeared. Bracketed German words have also been liberally inserted both to clarify and highlight words and connections that are difficult to translate, and to link this translation more closely to the German text. This definitive edition will serve the needs of scholars well acquainted with Heidegger's work and of students approaching Heidegger for the first time.

This is the single most important book for me for which I have ever read. The first time I read this book about a year ago it was a struggle and I only got the pieces of the story and didn't get the whole. Upon my second reading and after having dipped my toes into many other philosophy books, I now realized that Heidiegger is an incredibly good writer and he knows how to tell his story coherently. I am not a philosopher. Heidegger is not necessarily abstruse after a first reading.Dasein, the being (thing) that takes a stand on its own being is unlike any other being in the universe. That kind of being always has in its background a variation of the the three big questions along the lines about our design (where did I come from), purpose (what am I supposed to do) and reason (where does my purpose lie). All three questions presuppose the existence of a self as a human being (Dasein). Hence the question of the most interesting being of all, our own being.Heidegger starts the book with Hegel (consciousness is the 'indeterminate immediate') and ends the book with Hegel (time as now, but Heidegger is clearly not happy with that either). Hegel's 'Phenomenology of Mind (Spirit)' is my second favorite book and I read it (and his Logic) after I had read 'Being and Time' the first time. Hegel uses the abstract to explain the abstract and uses a dialectic (thesis, antithesis, synthesis) to bring it to reality (at least his version of reality).Heidegger does something different. He'll start with things but end with time as if he wanted to do that all along, but he ends the book murkily because he is not comfortable with time. Einstein takes time out of the universe (as Parmenides does) through his 'block universe'. Einstein's original sin (his words) was entwining the absolute speed of light with a physical clock (Bergson knows this and does get cited in this book and Einstein 'theory of relativity' gets cited in a footnote but mostly to explicitly ignore it). Heidegger wants to put becoming back into the world and does his best at trying.I want to get to the reason why I love this book so much. Dasein is thrown into the world and we lose our authentic selves because the "they", the idle chatter (gossip, Facebook), the entanglement, and the atunement (mood of the world) takes us away from our ownmost, nonrelational (never relating to death), and inseparable self. The self that allows us to understand most appropriately.Dasein is always in guilt from the anxiety and fear from the potential being ahead of death that we all have. The guilt can be thought of as the debt we always owe ourselves because we know that we will die (Camus' 'the absurd'). An analogy I came up with that would not have been possible in 1927 is that the debt we have is similar to the near violation of the conservation of matter that happens when a virtual particle is created in space. The particle is created and near simultaneously (but not quite at the exact time) an anti-particle is created and it is destroyed unless this happens on the horizon of a black hole. The particle that is originally created only exists in the emptiness of space as long as it knows that a debt must be paid leading to its own annihilation. Otherwise, the particle could not exist without violating a conservation law.It is our authentic existence that makes Dasein care (our conscience calls ourselves). The worldviews we have are a 'facon de parler' (convenient fiction). The book "Sapiens" gets this point. Heidegger states "that science has its origins in authentic existence", but "I will not show that in this book". He'll speak of history as a science to show that how we understand history is analogous to how we experience ourselves. Dilthey's 'generations' which is footnoted and I looked up to confirm that it meant the cohorts that we're put in with make us partly who we become, often less authentic.I usually detest (maybe loathe is a better word) self help books ("The Purpose Driven Life" is probably the single worst book I've ever read). I've never have seen a better self help book than this book. Our purpose for life lies within understanding our own understand of being in the world and understanding the variation to the three big questions. This book has that and also provides insights and justifications into why I think the way I do. I just love his insult at people who say "I don't have the time", they, according to him (and me) are inauthentic irresolute' because the person who understands will have 'anticipatory resoluteness' and always make time appropriately.Appropriately is how we must lead our ownmost being. Our ethical, moral, and ontological (in a way, philosophical) views come from our understanding, discourse, attunement and entanglement with being in the world and is up to us to grab onto our authentic selves. As Heidegger says, 'speaking a lot about something does not in the least guarantee that understanding is thus furthered". So therefore, I'll stop writing about why I love this book so much.

I've given this a 5-star rating for two reasons:First, Being and Time is an important work, not only for understanding 20th century philosophy, but for understanding what it means to be human. Everyone ought to read this book, not just those interested in philosophy.Second, Stambaugh's translation, while not perfect, makes this work much more accessible than previous translations.

I am Germanless, but in comparing this translation to MacQuarrie and Robinson I find 1)Stambaugh is easier to read with a free flow in her English which however at times leads to indefinieness; 2) Stambaugh will sometimes come to a more definite and clearer conclusion than M&R, but then sometimes the reverse; 3) Stambaugh has an excellent index organized much like M&R's with a few headings M&R does not have BUT it has NO German index as M&R has; 4) Stambaugh has the later marginal comments Heidegger made that M&R does not. However, sometimes M&R has a formulation that seems more precise and more like Heidegger than Stambaugh. M&R also has footnotes on the translation that are sometimes crucial to understanding what is going on in the main text. And it English index has a few headings not found in Stambaugh as well as having a German word index. Having BOTH translations, and being able to compare them, can be an emense help in understanding Heidegger.

Certainly, there is substantial variation in motivation of readers to read Being and Time (1927) by Martin Heidegger. This variation can range from the lowly motivated, "Guess it might be nice to understand Heidegger,"to the highly motivated, "I must understand Heidegger, at all cost." Readers can also vary in their expertise in philosophy from those who are general readers to graduate students and professors of philosophy. I count myself among the latter spectrum, i.e., the highly motivated, although I'm not a professor of philosophy nor was I a graduate student in philosophy.Insofar as one is sufficiently primed to read Being and Time, this translation by Joan Stambaugh and Dennis J. Schmidt makes Heidegger especially accessible. My first attempt to read Being and Time ended in frustration and failure. So I obtained several seemingly more comprehensible books: "Introduction to Metaphysics," by Martin Heidegger (English version, 2000, Yale University Press); "Being-in-the-World," by Hubert L. Dreyfus (1991, MIT Press); and "Heidegger Explained," by Graham Harman (2007, Carus Publishing, Open Court). After studying the books mentioned above I obtained Being and Time in the current translation (Stambaugh/Schmidt). What a difference! Compared to my first attempt reading Being and Time the second time proceeded more smoothly and with greater comprehension. Preparing myself by reading the preparatory works mention above was well worth the effort. Being and Time is now highly accessible to this highly motivated reader.Whether one studies texts supplementary to Being and Time I suggest one method of reading Heidegger's treatise: simply plod along as best as one can. The temptation - at least for me - was to meditate on small bites of text trying to digest their meaning perfectly. This is a bad strategy in my opinion. Using this method, finishing Being and Time could take months. Instead simply move along at a slow but steady pace without worrying about perfect comprehension. This is because Heidegger repeats the major themes in Being and Time throughout the entire book. Perhaps think of reading Being and Time as climbing a steep, treacherous mountain. The highly motivated hiker encounters all sorts of difficulties along the way but keeps moving forward towards the summit.I recommend highly this translation of Being and Time.

S&Z gets 5 stars always, but I am giving 5 stars for the translation.

A very well prepared edition of Martin Heidegger's Being and Time, I strongly recommend this version. SUNY press is a great publisher.

Purchased this darling book for our soon to be 3 year old granddaughter's birthday. She is fascinated with airplanes, airports, etc. This book is a wonderful introduction biography for this young age group and the ending was handled beautifully! The illustrations are also well done.

Not my favorite out of the set. The illustrations are a bit dark and lackluster. The storyline isn't as captivating as Coco, Frida, or Maya.

Such an adorable book. Bought it for a baby shower, baby will be named Amelia. The book is cute colors and bright pictures, the story was easy to read yet very positive! I want to keep buying all the other books as the baby hits holidays and birthdays!

Lovely book. If I had a daughter I would have the full series. Gave this as gift to friends daughter

I really loved this book for my daughter. She loves it too! I’ll definitely be buying more of these for her.

Love this series, especially the ones about women. As a mom of a little girl, we sometimes struggle to find books with strong female characters. These hit the mark and are great for toddlers or early readers.

Love these books. I want the whole series for my daughter. Makes a great gift too.

This is a cute book. Illustrations are nice and they handle Amelia's disappearance well at the end.

The “we/they” division is global in scale and catastrophic in scope. It is already testing our civility, our security, our cultural identity, and our commitment to the ideals of democracy. But you already know that. This is the latest in a growing list of books that seeks to understand why the we/they divide exists without, to its credit, falling into the trap of using the data to simply fan the fires of partisan division. Bremmer has a political agenda (we all do), and he’s no fan of Trump, the person. He does, however, go out of his way to note, “Donald Trump didn’t create us vs. them. Us vs. them created Donald Trump, and those who dismiss his supporters are damaging the United States.” Whether you agree with that or not, he is one of a handful of analysts willing to try and rise above the personal vilification that defines so much of our current political debate. The author reviews the “we/they” division around the world and his analysis of current events in places like Nigeria and Venezuela is revealing and informative. I must admit, however, that for a time I found the analysis to be just a bit repetitive and a little superficial. There are lots of facts and figures but not a lot of insight into the why behind the what.I do believe, however, that Bremmer essentially closes the “why” loop in the last section of the book when he takes up the obvious question of a way forward. In short he believes that we must do no less than redefine the social contract between the government and the governed. And it is here that he once again opens his thinking in a way that few other authors have. All too often any discussion about the social contract devolves into a largely PC debate about freedom of the press, representative democracy, and the legal protection of marginalized people. We talk about authoritarianism and fascism, but what most citizens want, in the end, is a government that is fair, trustworthy, and competent, treats them with respect, and, most importantly, has their collective interests at heart. And that, Bremmer points out, is a social contract we can find common ground on. We are never going to agree on every aspect of what a good government should or should not do. If we can agree on the framework of a social contract that acknowledges the inequities created by globalism, the challenges presented by the mass migration of people, the need for lifelong education in a technologically advancing world (without ignoring the continued importance of the traditional liberal arts), and the global desire for personal security, we can make a start. My only disappointment with the book is that he doesn’t really take on the issue of the growing power of the corpocracy. No segment of society has benefited more from the asymmetry of globalism than the corporate and financial elite. Adjusting the social contract without, at the same time, revisiting the economic contract between workers, employers, and communities, will amount to nothing.Bremmer does, however, introduce the universal wage, which is not a new idea and will ultimately have to precede any chance of addressing the we/they divide. Globalism and technology have essentially commercialized every aspect of what it means to live in the modern world. We have to take the mere fight for survival (and the security of health care) off the table if we are to have any hope of restoring economic progress and human dignity. The author does provide several ideas for doing that although he stops short of a specific agenda and he is a little less optimistic than I’d prefer, perhaps naively, to be. “Things have to become much worse, particularly for the winners, before they can become better for everyone else. This is the ultimate failure of globalism.”If, however, we can all approach the issues with the even-handedness and objectivity that Ian Bremmer does here, we can surely accelerate the process.

I was astounded by the intellectual honesty of this book. Ian Bremmer is a credible globalist who worked his way up in life to the pinnacle of success as a Ph.D. and business owner, after having been born to a single mom in a working-class suburb of Boston. He has “street cred” as a man who has one foot in America’s working class, and one foot in its meritocracy “elitist” class. He’s very obviously never forgotten where he’s come from, or where’s he’s going. He comes across as an open-minded economist who seeks to make a case for preserving globalism by honestly weighing its benefits vs. its costs. He does not deny that many big business executives and politicians have underestimated the costs of globalization. Nor does he deny that many people are justifiably angry about their misrepresentations. He nevertheless believes that globalism represents the best path forward for humanity and seeks to show that its benefits outweigh its costs. Whether you’re a Populist or a Globalist, you can be sure that your views will receive a fair hearing. For me, the most interesting aspects of the book are the inherent contradictions of globalism. Even such an honest and comprehensive analyst as Dr. Bremmer does not resolve them. On the one hand, he says:=====Advances in automation and artificial intelligence are remaking the workplace for the benefit of efficiency, making the companies that use them more profitable, but workers who lose their jobs and can’t be retrained for new ones won’t share in the gains. Technological change then disrupts the ways in which globalization creates opportunity and shifts wealth. As a result, large numbers of U.S. factory jobs have been lost not to Chinese or Mexican factory workers but to robots. A 2015 study conducted by Ball State University found that automation and related factors, not trade, accounted for 88 percent of lost U.S. manufacturing jobs between 2006 and 2013.8=====Then he says:=====Globalization creates new economic efficiency by moving production and supply chains to parts of the world where resources— raw materials and workers— are cheapest…. In the developed world, this process bolsters the purchasing power of everyday consumers by putting affordable products on store shelves, but it also disrupts lives by killing livelihoods as corporations gain access to workers in poorer countries who will work for lower wages.=====So, which is it? Are all these millions of jobs being lost because of automation not related to trade, or are they being lost because companies are firing their higher-paid American and European moving the work to the cheapest labor countries? In my view, it is that companies are moving the work to cheap-labor countries to AVOID having to invest in technologies to keep their American and European workers productive. It’s cheaper to replace 1,000 Americans earning $25 / hour with 1,000 Mexicans and Chinese earning $2 / hour than it is to invest $20,000,000 in making the American workers earning $25 / hour more productive.Furthermore, it is difficult to produce a product in the USA where the average wage is $25 / hour and sell it in Mexico or China, where the average wage is $2 / hour. Those $2 / hour Mexicans and Chinese don’t earn enough money to afford the product. So what’s an American company going to do? They’re going to fire their American employees, move the work to Mexico and China, and produce it with $2 / hour labor. They’re going to sell part of the production locally, and then import the rest into the USA. They are going to inflate their profit margins on the USA sales by arbitraging the $2 / hour labor cost in Mexico and China with an American price list. But don’t Americans benefit by getting products cheaper? Not necessarily. Dr. Bremmer points out that Americans would rather have jobs that allow them to afford SOME products, even if they are relatively expensive, than to be unemployed and unable to afford any products, even if they are relative cheap. Nor, is there really any indication that foreign-made products are cheaper. We’ve been told that “If Iphones were made in the USA they’d cost $700 and no American would buy them.” Iphones ARE made in China, and they DO cost $700, and Americans still buy them. The winner is Apple, which pockets the difference between cheap Chinese labor costs and Americans’ ability to pay $700 for an Iphone. I am happy with Apple products and own the stock, so I am not picking on Apple. Just saying that there is no reason why it can’t make Iphones in the USA, and put Americans to work instead of Chinese. And then Bremmer addresses the question of immigration:=====…“We can see that Trump’s biggest enthusiasts within the party are Republicans who hold the most anti-immigration and anti-Muslim views, demonstrate the most racial resentment, and are most likely to view Social Security and Medicare as important.”=====But why do we need copious immigration if it is true that technology is destroying so many existing jobs? Why bring more people into the country to fill jobs that don’t exist? My view is that our borders are intentionally left open to illegal immigration because: A) Big business wants them here to beat down wages, and B) Liberals want them in here to dilute the legacy, conservative-voting population and create more Liberal voters. And, let me say that I am a business owner who is married into an all-immigrant Hispanic family. My wife, a naturalized U.S. citizen voted for Mitt Romney in 2012 and Trump in 2016. I voted for Obama in 2012 and Trump in 2016. Dr. Bremmer describes the motivations of white folks like me, with industrial traditions in the Midwest, who switched from Obama to Trump.Dr. Bremmer leaves many questions unanswered. His view is that unrestricted free trade with all countries is good, because….free trade with all countries is good; open borders to allow copious legal / illegal immigration into a country is good, because….copious immigration is good.” These are tautologies, of course, that are taken as matters of faith, and not necessarily of evidence. He also covers the need to remediate the ill effects of globalization, but admits that “these benefits are easier to promise before deals are approved than to deliver after they’re signed and politicians no longer need to keep their word.”My conception of Globalism is that it is an organization of big business / big government crony capitalists, supported by liberals in the media and academia, who seek to supplant national democracies with unelected supra-national bureaucracies unaccountable to the people of any nation.“You don’t like our shipping your jobs overseas. Well, that’s too bad. The World Trade Organization says there’s nothing we can do about it.”“You don’t like our opening our borders to hordes of illegal foreign immigration. Well, too bad, the World Court says we have to allow it.”The objectives of big business crony capitalists are to replace the high-wage labor in the developed countries with cheap foreign workers. The objectives of Liberal politicians are to replace the legacy populations of each developed countries with Third World people who are prone to being manipulated to socialist agendas. If that’s your view, you will enjoy this book. If your view aligns with Dr. Bremmer’s that globalism must be maintained with all its warts, you will enjoy his view. My opinion about globalization has not changed after reading the book, but I am in the process of considering Dr. Bremmer’s points. My thinking may be matured as I reflect on his views, or perhaps it will not be changed. But I WILL reflect on Dr. Bremmer’s views, as I reread portions of the book.

Ian Bremmer’s Us vs. Them: The Failure of Globalism will not please many for very different reasons but in the growing literature on the impact of 21st century developments, globalization and inequality, Bremmer leads in setting out the playing fields and their future for a wide cross section of the world in revealing analysis, and where answers are beginning to be advanced.*In the age of Trump he refreshingly has nothing to say about the man until a final chapter his point being the times have made Trump possible but the man is just one of many populists gaining political power, Bremmer being among the few who understand why. As he notes, ‘My mother would have voted for him, my brother did.’Among those who have been aware of how fast former perceptions have fallen away since the turn of the century Bremmer will be enjoyed for his multinational studies, for those conditioned by the carping ignoramuses in the media ‘Us vs. Them’ will only be a puzzlement that may start to open new channels. The book could richly change what the media rattles on about if read and understood by the pundits searching for answers. For those who follow the generated discontents in many lands and locations, Bremmer list out what is being offered as remedies without pushing any particular agenda. The future is a vast unknown but some are paying attention. If curious do read it, he knows his subject.* China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Turkey, Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and South Africa.

As someone who has grown up with two wonderful, caring parents to support me, I found Guo's book to be especially heart-wrenching. Her family history, and the way she overcomes her humble beginnings and the hyper-restrictive culture of China in the 1970s and 1980s to not only find herself, but travel overseas and find love and success in the UK, is truly inspiring. Yes, there are many darker or painful moments in the book, but Guo does an excellent job of revealing flashes of insight from Chinese culture through folklore and storytelling, and she has a way of putting in subtle humor and personal remembrances that make her immediately accessible as a person. After reading this book, I feel like I truly have met Guo, and her strong, creative spirit adds an understated current of optimism throughout the book, despite her tragic past.

A fascinating story, and a compelling read. The author writes in fairly short chapters, which makes for ease of readability. In a country with as many people as China there must surely be many others that could recount similar experiences, but Xiaolu has told hers very well, from her days as a small child in a remote fishing village on China's coast living in poverty with a long-suffering grandma, and a troubled and violent grandpa, through reuniting with her parents in a growing industrial city, to Beijing for studies, and her eventual move to UK: she tells it all in clear and spare prose.Parts of her story are disturbing, and some not for the squeamish, and others tug at the heart strings. It's the story of a girl struggling to escape the circumstances of her childhood, the tensions of her own family, and the barriers to her creative spirit. Finally, she finds a partner and has a baby - but she never tells us whether or not she found the love that was missing from her life. I hope she has.If you are interested in personal stories, this is a good read. If you are trying to understand modern China, you should read it: it doesn't represent all of China, but it surely informs us of a part.

This story of youth compelled me all the way along—Nine Continents provided me a precious window in to one coming of age in China. I could well imagine teaching this with Oedipus Rex. Her voice is unsentimental and direct, which is important to her theme, and yet she doesn’t fetishize that....which is tempting for a writer, I’m guessing. Finally, I felt that I learned something about coming of age in China at a certain time under certain conditions....something one cannot glean through other means....and it IS so very gratifying to feel enlarged by one’s reading choices. Bravo to her for the book and for the courage of her life...

I learned so much about growing up during China’s cultural revolution! So hard to be a girl born during those years. Real insights into complicated family issues.

Great book, and thanks to the audiobook I was allowed to read along at reasonable pace even with my poor vision. Thanks!

Very interesting story so well written. Recommend highly.

This book was written beautifully. I loved the way each chapter was a story in its own right. Xiaolu is a remarkable woman and a wonderful writer. I highly recommend.

I'm not typically a memoir fan as the story usually suffers from that first person bias that comes with telling your own life events. I picked this book up solely as an amateur historian interested in a first-person account of post-Mao China. I never expected that I would get to read my favorite memoir of the year.Guo's memoir is a world apart from so many that I have read. It starts slowly and small, as the tale of a young girl abandoned by her parents would. The scenery of each part of her life is vibrant in description but you also feel the stifling, abusive weight of it as she searches more and more for herself. Though the tone is calm, there is a lot of violence in young Xiaolu's life and it ages her soul. As you read, your connection to her grows ever stronger through all her struggles. I out loud congratulated the author on her first big success and felt true, sweet joy for her. Many fiction books never get that response for me, let alone a memoir. I have so much respect for this woman, for the life she has led, and I wish her every happiness and success in the future. A tale of resilience and triumph through every struggle, and about being true to yourself.Note: I received a free Kindle edition of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I would like to thank NetGalley, the publisher Grove Atlantic, and the author Xiaolu Guo for the opportunity to do so.

A clear and useful explanation of both Functional and reactive programming in Java 8. As a bonus Venkat has a great sense of humor and fun writing style.

Finally, an excellent side by side demonstration of the old procedural style with the new functional style. This book explains what functional programming means, and why it's important, while introducing the new Java 8 features. You can't go wrong with this book.

An amazing and engaging author. This book does an excellent job explaining how to take advantage of Functional Programming now that it's here in Java 8. Venkat is a rare creature, who has not only a deep understanding of the inner working of Java and program languages in general, but also ENTERTAINS as he explains. If you've been lucky enough to see Venkat present on this subject, you'll find the same humorous, self-effacing approach in his writing. If you haven't seen him, Google! You won't be disappointed.Functional Programming in Java 8 is a paradigm shift - this book helps the java programmer understand this new way of thinking about how we compose our objects to benefit from FP. As a Java Professional of many years, this book really helped me understand this new way (in Java) to write robust, reusable, and efficient code.

This book is well written, detailed examples and user friendly explanation. But it lacks more detailed explanations for lambda. This book is not for novice but intermediate or higher.

Exactly what I expected.

This book it's a good introductory book to the functional programming paradigm in java.

Very good insight into Java 8

I like Java 8's new functional programming (FP) features, but I don't like this book. The book is shallow. Mainly he just writes simple examples and then repeats in prose what the code does. The author's constant hyping and cheering for the new FP features becomes annoying fast. He over uses adjectives like, "powerful", "easy", and "effortless". The new features are nice, but they're not that much more powerful than Java already was. Any program you can write in Java 8, you can also write in Java 7 or 6 or 5 ...Java's new FP features can make code simpler in some cases, which is good. But these new features can also make the code harder to understand. It's possible to make code too concise - fit too much on a single line (as some programmers can't help themselves from doing). Unfortunately, this can makes code harder to understand by someone who must maintain it later. The FP features should be used with care.I didn't realize that Amazon has a seven day return policy on Kindle books. Had I known this, I would've returned it.I don't recommend this book or author.
