I read Alida's last book and loved it so I was a little worried that this started out so serious. From eating disorders, the author's revelation that she was an a*hole in order to be cool and how to out yourself as a Feminist, Nugent's topics are a little more serious than her last book. But she still has a smart, original voice that can discuss makeup, giving her virginity and what it means to be a Feminist.I think many people can relate to Nugent and hopefully her book will help women that are "too cool" to have any other women friends.

Reading "You Don't Have to Like Me" is reminiscent of sitting down and chatting with a girlfriend over a glass of wine. Alida Nuget artfully discusses what it is to be a woman and a feminist in a funny, relate-able way!

What a great read! Funny, honest and entertaining. There are so many nuggets of feminists wisdom combined with quality jokes/stories I found it difficult to put it down.

Witty, funny, and inspiring. I absolutely love this book. Definitely a great read.

I have familiarity with data mining concepts and general machine learning. I am a practitioner of Machine Learning and am very interested in applying these models to real world problems. The purpose of buying this book was two fold: 1. I wanted to get an understanding of deep learning - how neural networks work and how they can be put to use and 2. How do neural networks compare in relation to other conventional machine learning models? How are they related and where is their place in the field of machine learning?From either point of view, I feel that every penny I spent on buying the book is worth more than its weight in gold. This book starts with a fairly detailed introduction into simple neural networks. The early chapters establish crucial and very useful connections between conventional machine learning methods and how neural networks can be built to mimic them. Ample examples and details are given to walk the user through intricate scenarios. Example, there is a whole section which unboxes gradient descent and explains the math behind it. There are several places in the book where connections are drawn between neural networks and how they simulate linear regression, logistic regression and SVMs. Several variants and differences are also explained in great detail. Once these are established, early development in neural networks are addressed - Radial Basis Functions and Restricted Boltzmann Machines are discussed in depth. After setting the fundamentals, the author goes on to address topics in deep learning - starting with RNNs, CNNs, Deep Reinforcement Learning and more advanced topics like GANs.The book also provides and cites ample references which inform the user about the historical progress and development of the field. The references have been compiled with great care and so are the diagrams. Very detailed explanations are provided to connect practicality of the methods. For instance, for activation functions, several examples are provided based on what functions are used in practice and how the choice impacts the complexity of models and what conventional ML models they map to.A more detailed review will follow as I progress more through the book but for starters, this is a great book to buy - be it for reference, or teaching a course or for getting to know the field. If you have experience in ML, you will definitely benefit from the insightful connections of neural networks with conventional ML methods. For teaching, the accompanying web page has a wealth of resources in the form of slides, Image sources for pictures in the book to compose your own slides and other files accompanying the book. Definite buy to have in your shelf if you are interested in Deep Learning.

This is a fantastic book from the academic perspective, and hasquite a bit for practitioners too in terms of conceptual understanding.Considering the fact that it is a mathematically intensive book,it is relatively easy to understand. Not an implementation book, but great fordeeply understanding concepts. The book has managed to providediscussions of the architecture of lots of real-world applications of neuralnetworks in text, images, among others, which is good forpractitioners. Certainly, hands down better than the Goodfellow book,the only other directly comparable book out there in terms of styleand material covered.

I've truly enjoyed this book. I don't have a mathematical background, so some machine learning techniques can be difficult to understand without a lot of serious effort. I haven't had that problem with this book. It explains how various neural networks work at a conceptual level, which is a must-have for anyone considering doing serious work in the field. Even though it's math intensive, I found it very easy to understand and the figures were incredibly helpful in piecing everything together. It is also very comprehensive. For the past year, I have been doing survey research in the field and this book is thorough: it goes in detail on every major model and advancement.Just keep in mind that this is not a technical how-to, it focuses mainly on conceptual understanding.It is not easy to simplify a complex and difficult field in such a well-thought out way. I'd recommend it to researchers, students and everyone else interested in deep learning.

The "Neural Networks and Deep Learning" book is an excellent work.The material which is rather difficult, is explained well and becomes understandable(even to a not clever reader, concerning me!).The overall quality of the book is at the level of the other classical "Deep Learning" bookof Goodfellow, both books are outstanding and can help to providetheir own views at the exploding domain of deep learning.In my opinion the reader can better benefit from studying both books together,they provide complementary insights to the subtle and intricate mathematics andalgorithms.

The book fires off statement after statement with very little context. References and comparisons are made to algorithims and concepts that haven't even been introduced yet. If I hadn't already read introductions to neural networks online, I'd have no idea what he's talking about, and seldom do when he splatter shots a new concept onto the page. In which case I'll stick with the online references.

The book is awesome. The theory in the book gives great intuition on what is going on with deep neural networks. With average knowledge of calculus and linear algebra, the math of deep learning is easily understood in the book with the great intuition the author builds prior to the mathematical equations. The book allowed me to build deep learning applications from scratch and makes it almost trivial to build them with the available libraries out there like keras, tensorflow, or pytorch.

An Excellent book for students, researchers and engineers at all levels.This book tells you the most important background, theories, models, methods and practices in deep learning. Unlike many serious books that are hard to understand, it is really enjoyable to read this book that clearly explains how the whole stuff works together from the very begining to the very end in concise and most accurate language.I have been working in this area for more than one decade from the era when we simply called "deep learning" "neural networks," and well followed it evolving into deep learning and AI. But I still learn a lot and refresh my idea when I read many chapters in this book.Definitly will recommend it to all my friends and colleagues.

This collection is an informative guide about one of the most important historical empires with a vast territory which rose around 7 centuries ago and survived till the early 20th century.

I loved this combination of books. I usually don't read anything in this time period but I was curious. The Ottomans were much more than I expected-lots of intrigue, diplomacy, warfare and culture and an empire to rival the size of Rome at its peak. Keeping a notebook on the succession of the Sultans and the multitude of prince's helped a lot. Complex as some of the thrillers I have read. I also liked his style of writing on these three. It kept me interested.

Though not within my usual realm of reading I found this book interesting. A great deal of information on a empire that was in control for a long time and a ruler in Sulieman that has few rivals throughout history.

In these books we see one of the most dominant empires from ancient or close to it times until the early 1900s. An empire that lasted such a long time . This gives all one needs to know about the Ottoman Empire. Good & bad rulers along with their decisions impacted the world at the time & beyond.Excellent job by Captivating History.

This was an informative read about the Ottoman Empire. It lasted a long time in a region where the empires come and go quite frequently.

This book is well written, scholarly, accurate and easy to read. It provides a clear, concise summary of the latest research and reasoning about the Coronado Expedition. It places Coronado into the context of Spanish exploration and expansion of the New World. Its examination of Cortes' conquest of Mexico as the direct precursor to Coronado is tremendously useful. I used this book as a general text from which I could branch out into related topics. The presence of citations to other works was very useful to me. There are perhaps other books on Coronado which have come out recently that are more authoritative than this, but their intended audience is other academics. This is by far the best book on this topic for the general reader. Highly recommended.

It's well researched, mostly well written, many new facts, at least to me are revealed. I discovered how thorough the Spanish were in keeping records. The Catholic Church and its religious order the Franciscans are seen in a much better view, then I would have thought. Spanish greed for gold is behind all the explorations made north of Mexico City deep into present day United States. As often happens in books like this having a lot of maps, it would be better if they would refer to the page rather than the map number.

Whenever a historian attempts the difficult task of portraying historic events objectively, he or she faces a nearly impossible challenge, as we write from our own paradigm. But William K. Hartmann has proven himself equal to such a task in “Searching for Golden Empires: Epic Cultural Collisions in Sixteenth-Century America”. Hartmann’s approach is a rare and valuable one, in that he uses not only the records of the Spanish as they encountered the New World, but he also accesses the accounts of the Aztecs, Mixtecs, and other native cultures, many of them translated and recorded by the Spanish priests who accompanied the conquistadors and explorers. The players in the game are varied and fascinating, from Aztec ruler Moctezuma to Hernan Cortez, Cabeza de Voca, the “lying monk” who may not have been, and Spain’s King Carlos. Hartmann portrays each individual as a real, three-dimensional person, providing the reader with a deeper understanding of the complex events during this critical time in history. Armchair anthropologists, historians, and casual readers alike will enjoy this window into the dramatic shifting of cultures in the Americas.

this book is a terrific. hartmann paints the big picture then focuses on spanish searching in american southwest before jamestown or plymouth rock. the sidebars and maps assist the reader to.follow the routes taken by these explorers- cortes, cabeza de vaca, the black slave estaban, friar marcos de niza and coronado. you can, by logic and motive, examine the facts and live this history. hartmann's analysis is superb and he is a good writer. to get the most out of this book you must know geography and have access to google earth. most of this country is unchanged from 1535. this is not a book for wimps or the lazy. if curiosity is the mother of intellect this book is for you. enjoy it- i have.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Searching for Golden Empires"! I had read other books on various Spanish incursions into the Americas but hadn't read much about Coronado before, and this book not only swept me along on his journeys, but tied together all those other Spanish exploits into one very readable, cohesive story. I appreciated how the author described the 'big picture' of everything that was happening during those times.Having lived in New Mexico, it was fascinating to learn that many of the areas I had blithely driven through were the sites of so much drama. This book has given me a greater appreciation for the history of the Southwest where I make my home. It was also interesting to read the comments by the Spaniards on these expeditions, about the vast herds of buffalo on the plains, having recently traveled through Kansas and Nebraska - where I saw a total of four buffalo. This book is very well written and researched, a great true-life historical adventure!The author is also a wonderful artist and has really captured the feeling of the vast scrub desert in the cover painting. I wish the interior illustrations had been in color, too.
