About the Author

Toni Buzzeo (www.tonibuzzeo.com) is a children's book author and reviewer and retired school library media specialist. She speaks at national, state, and regional library and reading conferences and does author visits at schools across the country. Among her many books are My Bibi Always Remembers and Just Like My Papa, companions to this book, and the Caldecott Honor-winning and New York Times best-selling One Cool Friend, ilustrated by David Small. She lives in Massachusetts. Mike Wohnoutka (www.mikewohnoutka.com) grew up in Spicer, Minnesota. His dad, an engineer, would bring home reams of paper with highway plans on one side. Mike filled the blank side of the sheets with drawings of race cars, snowmobiles, baseball players, super heroes, everything he was interested in. In high school his art teacher encouraged him to pursue art as a career. He graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a B.F.A. in illustration. Mike has published books with Random House, Dutton, Clarion, and Holiday House. He enjoys visiting schools and talking to students about illustrating children's books. I bought this book for my daughter, who LOVES another Toni Buzzeo book (Little Loon and Papa). This one is just as cute but a longer read than Little Loon. At 18 months, my daughter doesn't have the patience to sit through more than one or two sentences per page OR more than maybe 10 pages. I still think this is an excellent book and I know she will like it more when she's a little older.The book is about a little giraffe named Twiga who is trying to be independent but keeps running into trouble (falling in puddles, ant bites, etc.) I really like the message and Twiga's sunny outlook on things. Also, the illustrations are gorgeous!

Momma loves reading this with baby. I'm pretty sure it taste better than it looks as far as our son is concerned.

This is a perfect book for young children - it is about the theme of young children wanting to explore the world and parents who are always checking to be sure they are safe. My granddaughter loved it and we read it many, many times.

Very cute book. It went perfect with the giraffe shower theme.

excellent, but DIFFERENT, take on the Paris Commune of 1871

An interesting re-visiting of the Paris Commune (1871) by a mature scholar. The examination of proto-ecological leanings in some figures associated with the Commune is a significant addition to the scholarship of both the Commune and environmental history.

It's a good history book but please that what is said with a grain of salt and get more information about the subject than what is provided in the book

Despite the upheavals of 1911,the clash between, Nationalists-&-Communists, takeover by Japan, and the Cultural-Revolution of Chairman Mao, there are many, many authoritative records available, but many of them wildly disagree with each other on many, many major topics.The reasons for this are: very few people actually knew much about the actual live of Cixi, since if you weren't very close to her orbit, all you heard about was 2nd hand at best, and often far more removed than that.Of the people who actually knew about the "REAL" Cixi, I would list just 3: 1) Her chief Eunuchs, there were two, her first one went on a vacation of sorts, which was actually unlawful, although approved by CIXI. Somehow, his behaviour while on vacation led to his being beheaded by a government official in the area he was at, and although it was/would have been against the wishes of Cixi, his beheading was indeed lawful. Almost every person who describes this event, has a wildly different account, even though, in a broad sense, they sort of tell a similar story.2) Her lifelong semi-intimate companion Ronglu, who never left any memoirs, 3) The 'Princess' Der Ling who spent 2 years in her court {1903-1905} as her closest confidant/translator/semi-advisor. Ms Der Ling has been widely criticized and denounced, mostly unfairly by my account, but she wrote lucidly and intelligently about Cixi, and must be considered as a prime source for information about the REAL Cixi.BOTTOM LINE: No single book on Cixi is adequate by itself, at a minimum, if you are interested in her story you MUST read at least 4 books:"Dragon-Lady" by Sterling Seagrave, "Empress Dowager Cixi" by Jung Chang, and 2 of Princess Der Ling's books: "Old Buddha" & "Two Years in the Forbidden City.In addition, I highly recommend the following additional books for reference which are dirt cheap {used here on Amazon}: "Political History of China, 1840-1928, and "China's Last Empire / The Great Qing" by Harvard Press.FOR REAL, great background information on this timeframe you also need to read the extensive writings of Robert Hart, an Englishman who became the second Inspector-General of China's Imperial Maritime Custom Service from 1863 to 1911. {NOTE: I haven't even begun to go down that road yet}

An exceptional book about a very remarkable woman who was effectively the ruler of China for nearly half a century. She made her share of mistakes (all rulers do), but on the whole was probably among the smartest and wisest heads of state that China -- or any other country -- has ever had. And yet, because of the revolutionary upheavals in that country she has been largely lost sight of by historians (of which I am one by profession) and, even worse, tarred by all kinds of false accusations. It is true that she did represent a nondemocratic dynasty, but she also moved in her final decade in power to give her country an elected parliament and a western-style constitution. Jung Chang at times becomes a bit too enthusiastic about her subject, who she clearly admires, but on the whole this is a sound piece of historical writing, based on sources that have only been uncovered recently, and the prose is a pleasure to read. It would not be wrong to describe this account of the Empress Dowager as a real page-turner you will not want to put down.

This biography was a real eye-opener for me. Written by a Chinese author, it explains some of the protocol and reasoning behind Cixi's decisions, and casts her in an entirely different light. I found the book to be informative, enlightening, absorbing and entertaining, and it provided me with a better understanding of a recent exhibit at our art museum, called 'The Forbidden City', which showed many artifacts from her era. The most surprising thing to ME in the book was that in spite of being the Empress Dowager for quite a lengthy time, she never once set foot in the front gate of the Forbidden City, which is reserved exclusively for men! But she did put an end to the foot binding practice and ushered in the beginning of Modern China. Her reasons for doing so are sound, but rather surprising, since it also meant an end to her dynasty. In this age of Global Everything, because of the insights gained into the Chinese approach to life, in my opinion this book should be required reading for everyone in high school!

This book is small but mighty. I learned so much about how to live with my spouse's alcoholism. It completely changed my perspective and I am living a much more peaceful life.

The different perspectives helped me through a different time with my alcoholic. Highly recommend this and attending meetings.

Much of the book would apply to marriages where a partner is abusive, even if not alcoholic. The advice and illustrations are hands-on and useful. The book is about a hundred pages and very dated; however, the information is still valuable and well worth the price.I have my copy highlighted throughout. Here is a sample quote:"To see this situation realistically, she would have to understand how desperately the guilt-tormented alcoholic needs such weapons to bolster his own ego. When he uses these weapons to attack, it is not because he hates his wife but because he hates himself and needs to reassure himself that he is not all bad. He finds fault with the person nearest to him because it makes it a little easier for him to tolerate himself."This book is a useful support to the spouse of an alcoholic, reflecting the Al-Anon philosophy and general good common sense, which is sometimes overlooked by the partner in the throes of chaos generated by living with an alcoholic/abusive partner. This book was written by and for members of the Al-Anon family groups, but a wonderful perspective and approach to communication and team work in any marriage. Given that our US society's divorce rate is well-over 50% of all marriages, we who are in marriages or committed relationships could all benefit from the ideas presented here. A short, concise, well-written approach that is very well explained.

This book is a good start. I highly recommend reading this. It's very small but hits what seem like the most critical topics. It won't solve all your problems, but it will transition your way of thinking so that you can begin a healthy transformation.

As all literature from Al-anon, this book is sympathetic to the dilemma of the codependent spouse dealing with an alcoholic/addict, but it gives much more than sympathy. It is also very firm in telling us what we need to do to put the focus on taking care of ourselves no matter what the spouse is doing. The book is a quick read that should be referred to again and again, especially by a beginner. It is also a must read for those of us who grew up in alcoholic family systems and who have married other addictive and compulsive types, such as workaholics, food addicts, ragers, compulsive spenders, gamblers, sex addicts, etc. This book can be an eye-opener for those that feel they would be perfectly happy if their spouses were not using or drinking, because the book constantly reinforces that recovery has to start with us first, no matter what our spouses might be doing.

This is an awesome educational book. Gives perspectives on YL and on many other sources in the field of E.O.'s as well as educates you on Essential Oils. Be prepared it is very educational, meaning it can get a little snoozish. But it is a Chemistry book which anyone and everyone can understand. If you aren't that interested in all the bits and pieces of this science and field maybe not the book for you. I however love it, even if I have to have coffee while reading some portions :) A great educational tool for anyone working in the field, going into the field, or wanting to educate themselves for their own personal health reasons. It is a awesome find. I was so happy to receive it for the Amazon price!

Chemistry was my primary passion for 14 years of my life, including conducting graduate research in neurochemistry, but I almost didn't buy this book because of one of the reviewers saying that it was "replete with errors".But the book has so many great reviews I decided to take a chance on it, even though I already own a large collection of excellent aromatherapy books. Boy am I glad I did!The book is superb!The nit-picking reviewer who criticized it really doesn't know that they're talking about, the vast majority of the content is rock-solid.And the book is entertaining, informative, and has superb and extensive tables of detailed information that one can't find anywhere else.Priceless.

Written by a chemistry teacher who became an expert on essential oils, I have read through this book three or four times. The use of these oils extends far far beyond something that smell good, and can be used to revitalize and help heal the body. Makes sense, since that's what they do in plants, and they also work incredible well in us humans, if we know how to use them. Very highly recommended book for understanding how these oils actually work in our own bodies.
