About the Author

David A. Powell is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute (1983) with a BA in history. He has published numerous articles in various magazines, and more than fifteen historical simulations of different battles. For the past decade, David’s focus has been on the epic battle of Chickamauga, and he is nationally recognized for his tours of that important battlefield. The results of that study are the volumes The Maps of Chickamauga (2009) and Failure in the Saddle (2010), as well as The Chickamauga Campaign trilogy. The Chickamauga Campaign: A Mad Irregular Battle was published in 2014, The Chickamauga Campaign: Glory or the Grave appeared in September 2015, and the final volume, Barren Victory, was released in September 2016. David and his wife Anne live and work in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. He is Vice President of Airsped, Inc., a specialized delivery firm.

The guides vary in the detail in the narrative and the number of visited sites. David Powell’s “All Hell Can’t Stop Them’, the second of two books, which looks at the half of the battle/campaign for Chattanooga. This title concludes the story to, investigating the Union Assault on Missionary Ridge and Confederate stand at Ringgold, Georgia from November 24-27, 1863.Unlike the typical guide, this new work published by Savas-Beatie covers the follow up to the Chickamauga Campaign that witnessed the changing nature of Civil War combat and horrific casualties. This outstanding volume of the Emerging Civil War Series takes place in Tennessee and Georgia in 1864, where the Confederate Army of Tennessee led by General Braxton Bragg faced the Union Army of Tennessee led by General William T. Sherman, the Army of the Cumberland led by General George Thomas, Joe Hooker’s forces and Ulysses S. Grant. Upon arriving in Chattanooga, Union General Ulysses S. Grant had two purposes; break up the South’s choke hold on the Union Army of the Cumberland and safeguard General Ambrose Burnside’s ability to control East Tennessee. Though a Union victory, the fighting came at a great expense of life as well as Southern despair. Grant’s triumph showed the North that Federal armies could be victorious. Additionally, Grant became the commander of all forces in the western theater, he changed Union fortunes after a disappointing loss at Chickamauga, saved the Army of the Cumberland and routed Confederate General Bragg.
