I read this book to be more intentional in being a better communicator, thinking my listening was a strength. As I read, the author brought up when your mind wanders while listening to someone else speak or if you're thinking that you wish they'd get to the point already. I have to admit I do that at times. Being more aware of that and the tips to bring my attention back and focus were worth reading it.There were also a few tips on communicating I picked up as well, like the x,y,z approach and more. One of my favorite lines in the book was: "You might think the person already knows that you applaud, admire, or appreciate them, but how are they to know for sure unless you tell them? Remove all doubt and let them know." Straightforward, but powerful.The Action Guide included was invaluable, as well, as I begin to implement some of the tips into my daily life and with the people I love most.

This book is a critical addition to the library of anyone who has relationships (hint: all of us). If there is one thing that undermines all of our relationships, it is poor or lack of communication.I recently just completed a week long retreat on this exact topic, so I was pleasantly surprised at the completeness of the ideas in the book. The book starts essentially by addressing one's self, which is critical and convinced me the book was well worth the time.The chapter on "Listening Blocks" alone is worth the price. Simple tools like using the 3 A's make it easy to apply the ideas in this book. The book ends with a 12 day challenge that is sure to change your life.Highly Recommended.

An amazing “How To” guide to effectively communicate with anyone by listening with empathy. It shows how to be less judgmental in your listening and how to better understand the person to whom your speaking. The author has had plenty of experience working with couples and singles in counseling atmospheres and it shows it in his writing. A must read to help with your communication skills.

A gem of a little self-improvement book. I love it when each sentence is one I can take in - instead of raking my brain trying to figure out what the author means. Bento Leal III did a great job at making a common problem rather simple to solve: if we follow the plan through, of course. It works! I tried it! The language is warm, alive, and unique. Well done!

I found this book to be very readable and, unlike many books on communication skills, it is born out of real life experience in teaching thousands of couples. It is not a bunch of theoretical concepts but is practical and applicable immediately. A good read, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their relationships.

Definitely useful. Leal is able to synthesize timeless wisdom with some of the best of the last half of the 20th century into a simple format for action that is truly helpful. Focused on the idea that empathy (empathic awareness, empathic listening and empathic speaking) are the core of all effective communication and relationships, this book gave me some new things to ponder. While we've all learned about empathic listening from as far back as Stephen Covey, adding empathic awareness and empathic speaking in that same box is very helpful and concept-expanding.Hats of to the author. My wife and I are already working on the "12 Day Communication Challenge" offered as the conclusion to the book - great to have something practical to apply right away!
