Natalie Morales, Today Show Host"Moms and dads if you're at your wit's end trying to get your kids to eat healthy... well, fret no more! Finally, it's "The Sneaky Chef to the Rescue." As the mother of a very picky eater, the only way to get my son Josh to eat his veggies is to sneak it, and Missy's recipes are not only creative and delicious, they are a lifesaver for this often over-worried mom."Tyler Florence, Chef and Author"As both a father and a chef, I can tell you that it's sometimes easier said than done to get kids to eat right. But I've got to say, the Sneaky Chef series makes keeping your kids eating habits on the right track not just infinitely more manageable, but fun at the same time."Patricia Hametz, MD, MPH / Director, Center for Best Practices in Childhood Obesity Prevention / Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian"By creating delicious foods made with healthful ingredients that your kids will actually eat, Missy Chase Lapine succeeds in allowing family meal times to be fun and stress-free. Most moms will tell you that at some point, their child is a picky or finicky eater. There are only so many meals of mac and cheese, hot dogs, and chicken nuggets you can manage before you start looking for help. You want your child to eat more nutritional foods, but when they snub everything except what they've decided to eat, it makes it nearly impossible! The Sneaky Chef by Missy Chase Lapine has the perfect solution for any mom looking for a way to get their picky eaters to include more nutritional foods in their diet.In addition to being a recipe book filled with kid-friendly foods that they love, The Sneaky Chef explains how issues of control are what empowers the picky eater. Children don't have to eat poorly. They can enjoy nutritional and tasty food, which will help them fend off the childhood obesity monster that is creeping its way into the American household. Lapine gives many examples and reasons for "sneaking" the good stuff into their favorites, while making it easy for mom.The book is arranged in a fashion that is easy to read and easy to reference. It includes lists of foods that kids believe to be the good, the bad and the ugly. More lists include staples to buy, important foods to buy organic if possible, the most contaminated foods, and the tools you need to make your sneaking work best. Plus, in Chapter Five, you will read all about "The Sneaky Chef's Bag of Tricks," where you will learn to be the queen of sneaking nutritional foods into their favorites. Tricks include methods to combine foods (the sneaky way, of course), the health benefits of those tricks, and even how to make the food visually appealing for children so they dive right into their meal! There are thirteen total methods used to make your child's favorites into something healthier! It's a win-win situation! The second half of the book covers actual recipes you can use for breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner, treats and drinks. These are things that kids already love, but prepared in a way that makes you feel better about what they are putting into their mouths. Imagine your children eating things like peanut butter cookies, burgers, fries, pizza, pasta, chicken, meatloaf and even cheese dip without cringing from the lack of nutrition making it past their lips! The recipes are easy to follow, aren't full of ingredients you've never heard of (or rarely use), have nutritional highlights and many have variations you can use to tweak to your liking. Not only is this clever book a good educational reference, but it's a must have for every mom on the block. Please your children (and their palate) while giving them vitamins, vegetables, protein, fiber... and the list goes on! The Sneaky Chef is a book that lives up to its name, and then some!
EDIT - came back and dropped this from 3 stars to 2. The recipes are ok; the book is tough to use. There's too much flipping back and forth between recipes, and there's very little info as to the nutritional value listed with the recipes. And frankly, I think all of the editing and printing mistakes (not the authors fault) just frustrate me. Wait for the next edition, if there is one.-- Original review --We've only been using it a few days now, and the recipes are good. But the book itself is hard to use. See pics for examples - missing page references, lack of info about what equipment to use, etc. I cook *a lot* so I'm working through it. But for someone who doesn't cook much and is trying to get their kids interested in better food, this might be a struggle to work with.I've uploaded three pics as examples - just a few of the many problems found in the book. First pic: Where's the page number? Second pic: It's handy knowing which recipes these are used in, but again - a page number would really help. Third pic: obviously an editing/formatting mistake, of which there are many in the book.So again, the recipes are pretty good and we'll use them. But the book itself can be a challenge to use. Lots of flipping around and cross referencing to make it work.
I've had this book for a while now and I've tried using it twice. It didn't really help me feed my kidz any more veggies as they could still taste whatever it was that they weren't interested in.The theory is awesome. Putting it into motion can be expensive and not very practical, to be honest with you.My kidz didn't like the Macaroni and cheese or several other dishes. So for me and my family, it just didn't work out very well. I've found better results by just using budget friendly recipes that taste great. Also, if you have blood sugar issues like me. blending all those veggies can really make your blood sugar spike. So for me, this one is a no go.
3 Star Review for poor editing only, otherwise I rate between 4 and 5 (haven't finished the book yet)Poor Editing: Quite a few pages and recipes in the kindle for phone, PC, and cloud reader are missing the fractional measurement number for ingredients. See photo - I can't make this recipe unless I consult the paperback version of the book, which I don't own (yet), because I can't tell how much of 4 separate ingredients are required to make it. I've tried reading it on the kindle app for phone, PC, and amazon cloud reader and all share this problem of missing measurements.Great Content: The content is well presented, organized, and very readable, and informative. I've only had the opportunity to make one of the recipes (brownies) so far, but I look forward to making more. The brownies were a little heavy and fudge-like, which I enjoy, but if you're looking for fluffy cake-like brownies you may need to experiment. I used her suggestion to replace both white and whole wheat flours with whole wheat pastry flour in my batch.
This is a great book to start but I would recommend getting all of them. My picky toddler eats peas, broccoli, spinach, carrots...you name it...without flinching (foods he won't normally touch)! This is a book about pureeing vegetables and adding them to foods you eat without anyone knowing. It's great that the author has done the experimenting for you so you don't have to guess what purees work well with each food. I mostly use the dinner recipes in this and her other books and I still offer vegetables whole along with each dish that but now I'm not worried when he throws them on the floor. When he's ready to accept them whole I will still use this book because even the adults in my house know we always want seconds of the main dish so that means extra veggies!
