I read The Dance of Anger many years ago. When I recently decided to work on personal boundary issues I turned to this book. Following some of the principles described in the book, I'm in the process of changing a dysfunctional relationship with my mother. I have efforts that result in good outcomes and then I revert back to my old self. This book has helped me to stick with it and to stay true to myself in my effort to change the way I relate. It's working. He next book I'll read is The Dance of Intimacy. Thanks for an insightful and thoughtful book.

I have enjoyed, and learned from, reading Lerner’s “Dance of....” books for over 20 years. She always posits interesting things to think of in terms of interpersonal communication. Sometimes I feel I need to have some of her “advice” tattooed on my arms and hands 😄.I like that she uses a lot of personal anecdotes although I know some find it off putting. But I like that I can have a silent conversation “No, do I really do that?...Yes, it might work better if I....”I always feel better after reading her books and that, for me, is huge.

I cant say enough good things about this book.. if you love your spouse, but still constantly find yourself butting heads with him/her.. read this book.. i read this book after "The dance of anger". Between these and the book "Five love languages" the atmosphere of my marriage is vastly more peaceful now!

I found this book really helpful with understanding relationships and communication. My husband isn't one for self help books or counseling or anything like that so I tend to read a lot of this stuff on my own. This one was definitely easy to understand and made a lot of sense. I enjoyed it!

Great insight into our lives. Harriet is a fantastic writer and writes to all regarding your family, friends, relationships, and the basis of how you were raised, and how your parents' upbringing influenced how you are today. This book is one you should read over and over again. There is too much to take in with one pass. She gets it! Everyone will take something from this book - read it again in a couple of months and I am sure you will get another little gem of (oh! That is so why I do ________ (fill in blanks)) This is a keeper, and I would recommend it as gifts for all the people you love - NOT to change them, but for a deeper understanding of who they are, who their parents, grandparents, relatives, etc. are. This is NOT really a self-help book, more of an insightful guide to human nature, with Aha! moments sprinkled in. Quick, easy read, hard to put down.

It gives the information that it states it will. Albeit, in a very dry form. It proposes that Christians are appealing to Scripture. Yet it does not rely on Scripture and quotes more of the classics such as Aristotle, Kant and especially John Stuart Mill. First, the application is made to how these models of ethics have been used in Christianity and why they failed. I was not impressed with the writing or the research.

A tedious, but notably informational book for those who are interested in deciphering the ethics, morals, and virtues of Christianity. Reuschling’s book presents the reader with two aspects that are found within the intrinsic (conservative) and extrinsic (sociological) arguments, the sense of spiritual and physical positions. The belief from the narrative position that coincides with the intrinsic, being those of the more conservative way of living, and that of the extrinsic, which are found to harbor the more socialistic way of living. The association or narrative, that is recognized, enlightens the reader’s mind.as an awakening that warns that Christians must be very careful to distinguish the difference in becoming socially connected in the ways of Christ, as the many membered body by which is made up of the coming together individually by accepting Christ, and socially connected in the ways of Satan’s socialism in which stems from the ‘divide and conquer’ attitude in which causes individualism to become collectivist. If you are sincere in seeking the individual understandings of ethics, virtues and morals, the author provides it in this book.

Wyndy Corbin Reuschling, associate professor of ethics and theology at Ashland Theological Seminary, writes Reviving Evangelical Ethics: The Promises and Pitfalls of Classic Models of Morality, as an attempt to address misconceptions on the topic of ethics in general and Christian ethics in particular. To accomplish this, the author examines three classic theories of ethics: deontology, teleology, and virtue ethics. She desires to interact with these with the intention of articulating the claims of these classic theories and the ways in which the contexts and stories that gave birth to Kant's understanding of duty, Mill's principle of utility, and Aristotle's view of virtue may conflict from the Christian faith. Reuschling also presents a critique about the ways in which they limit moral norms to just duty, just what works, and to just personal piety. A substantial introductory chapter deals with the need of reviving evangelical ethics. The author believes that this revival is needed since Christian ethics is commonly defined as taking a right position on right issues based on social context and culture war debates. Instead, she elucidates that Christian ethics should be based on scripture, the Kingdom of God, and the Christian community, which leads to a development of capacities in moral agency, moral discernment, and the formation of conscience. In chapter one the author explains the three classic theorists by noting the influences and central ideas of duty, utility, and virtue. As an example, she disagrees with Kantian philosophy, which believes the only way to achieve a supreme principle of morality is by human reason. Chapters two, three, and four examine the appropriation of deontology, teleology, and virtue, respectively. In chapter two the author renames deontology with "just obeying the Bible" or a "trust and obey" type of system of morality. The author does this because the view of the Bible that is presented here limits its role in moral formation and its authority since it does not need to be believed, but simply obeyed. The subsequent chapter examines utilitarianism. According to the author utilitarianism contains as its foundations for morality happiness that brings the greatest good for the greatest number. Actions that produce the desired effect for the majority of the people are deemed good and just, even if the end justifies the means used to attend them. In addition, a discussion on utilitarianism is presented by demonstrating its influence in today's evangelical church and the communal nature of the Christian life. Chapter four is on Aristotle's theory of virtue ethics, which is the acquisition of specific virtues, or those qualities that make a person good, enables on to achieve a life of happiness, which is the end and substance of the moral life. Throughout the book the author uses Greek words like telos--goal, ekklesia--church, and others, which are not translated so that the lay reader can fully comprehend the author's intent. To properly explicate this difficult subject, the author equips herself with abundant resources to add credibility and weight to the main thesis. However, the manner in which the information is presented in the book makes it difficult to follow. For this reviewer, it was very difficult to follow the author's train of thought. The book begins with dealing with philosophical matters and ends with offering advice on homiletics. One wonders where has an ethics professor gained the experience and or knowledge to advice on homiletical issues and pastoral theology. A reevaluation of her opinion about utilitarianism is recommended. She heavily criticizes churches for reaching the world for Christ focusing on the results and not the means. If the means signifies straying away from biblical principles then it is expected that a Christian disagree, but if not, saving the world for Christ, regardless in the matter that is done, is welcomed. Overall, Reuschling work is well done.

In "Reviving Evangelical Ethics," Wyndy Corbin Reuschling critiques three classical models of thinking about ethics and morality, especially as those models have found their way into the ethical thinking of the 21st century American evangelical church. The first model that she analyzes is Immanuel Kant's deontological approach, which focuses exclusively on duty, obligation, and rules that can be ascertained by rational reasoning alone. And she is careful to acknowledge that her call to "revival" of evangelical ethics is not focused on eliminating the church's concern for rules or outcomes or virtues. In fact, she was especially clear to reiterate that the Bible can function as a source of rules of morality. Her point is that it does not only function in this way. And she very pointedly clarified that spiritual disciplines are an essential part of aligning the Christian life with right ethical thinking. However, they are insufficient to the entirety of that task. One place where I found her critique to be a bit uneven was the way that she seemed to entirely discard the influence of utilitarianism within the church, almost implying that there is no value in thinking about outcomes. Because she was so careful to repeat her disinterest in devaluing rules or virtues entirely, I was disappointed by what felt like her emotional reaction against any vestiges of utilitarianism within the church. I found this to be disappointing because I am convinced that there is some value for the church to think about not only the means but also the ends. If our ministry does not produce any discernible fruit as an outcome, then there seems to be value in considering whether our means are actually what God intends for us.What I found to be most refreshing and helpful about Reuschling's book was her refusal to allow Christians to settle for simplistic answers to complex ethical questions. This has been one of the issues with which I have been wrestling for quite some time, as I know many Christians who seem to want quick and painless solutions to all of life's problems. And they seem convinced that if we would just find the right part of the Bible, that such solutions would become obvious. Or they insist that if we were right with God through personal spiritual practices that He would speak these easy answers to us. And I am increasingly convinced that these notions are unreasonable and do not reflect the reality of what Christian ethical living is intended to be. Reuschling embraces this idea and suggests in numerous places throughout the book that what we need is thoughtful reflection and humble discussion and faithful study of the Scriptures in light of what the Bible is meant to be (rather than a reflection of what we might prefer it to be, a list of simple rules and clear-cut expectations). This willingness and even commitment to sitting in the tension of uncertainty and complexity is contrary to how I have lived most of my Christian life. And it is the sort of thing that many of my friends abhor (and find frustrating in their recent interactions with me). But Reuschling has done well to make the case that our interest in seeking a framework for faithfully understanding Christian ethics requires us to allow for complex things to remain complex.

so most manga/light-novel parallel publishes in america i read both volume 1s to see how i like either side. This is a manga that I think suffers very strongly without the text being narrated by the main character so if you have any interest in "nerd gets stuck in a game-like state/place and has ridiculous super powers", I strongly recommend you read the light novel instead of the manga because without the narration, the manga plays out in a somewhat boring or even generic manner.

Yukito Kishiro maintains his mastery over telling a griping, savage, brutal story in this last leg of Alita’s story, which begins by taking us back to her origin as the young cyborg child Yoko living on the war-torn surface of Mars. It’s amazing how quickly Kishiro is able to create an attachment between readers and characters, so that even with very little time spent with them, the death of a character is a truly impactful loss. For example, with a minor spoiler: there are two old men in the village Yoko and Erica’s new orphanage is, whom they meet as they take a tour of the town. Later, when the town comes under attack by an aggressive army, these two old men suddenly whip out rifles and start firing at the invaders with profesional military aim and posture. This INSTANTLY gives you a rushing feeling of “Oh my God! These two old vets are so fricken cool!” They take down the hostile scouts, and as they do so the scene transforms into their delusion, reliving the days of their time in the army, charging into battle with their squad to defend the children in the bunker. It’s exhilarating and heroic, and then tragic and heartbreaking as the surviving veteran’s delusion sees his squad leaving him behind in the moment before a missle wipes him out. Despite how frequent death is, each time it’s accompanied by a genuine pang of loss and heartbreak, no matter how little exposure we’ve had to the dying character. It’s a genuine wonder and proof of the author’s skill. Being a flashback to Alita’s origin, you know that she and Erica will survive--this removes some of the tension in their situation for the reader. And so to make up for that, Kishiro packs the pages full of tension for every other character. You have no idea who might die and who might survive, besides the two main protagonists; that tension, that hope, that dread, will keep you hunched over the pages voraciously reading to find out what happens next.Kishiro's other strength as an author is in portraying the harsh, dark side of mankind in graphic detail, while also contrasting it with inspiring heroes. At the orphanage Yoko and Erica meet Ninon Silber, who claims to be a noble of Mars who was separated from her parents, and will someday be Queen of Mars. She immediately sets herself up as an antagonist, trying to get Erica to throw Yoko away in favor of friendship with her. Ninon's behavior is creepy and arrogant, and when she later puts on a friendly face you just KNOW that she's planning some kind of vile trick. Which is why when her promise proves true, it's highly confusing. And then, as the town is destroyed by the invading army and Ninon's friends/followers are killed one after the other, Ninon dedicates herself completely to protecting the ones who are left, and you realize that her arrogant noble bearing is also coupled with a sense of duty, and her own strange kind of compassion.The original run of Battle Angel Alita is my favorite manga, Alita: Last Order lost sight of itself in my view but was still good, and now Mars Chronicles promises to be the strongest chapter yet in Alita’s incredible story.

And the series still continues to live on with an announced live-action film adaptation to be released in Japan in December 2018.After “Battle Angel Alita” was released, Kishiro would created the 19-volume series Battle Angel Alita: Last Order” which ran from 2000-2014. And right after “Last Order” was completed, Kishiro said the final chapter of the series “Battle Angel Alita: Mars Chronicle” (“Gunnm: Mars Chonicle” would come afterward and the series would begin in Kodansha’s “Evening” magazine on October 2014. The series is a direct sequel to “Last Order”.For those who are interested in the timeline: “Battle Angel Alita: Mars Chronicle” in AD 2326-2500; “Battle Angel” in AD 2533-AD 2546 and “Battle Angel Alita: Last Order” taking place in AD 2547.It’s important to note to avoid confusion is that “Battle Angel Alita” is a name that was created by Viz Media, when they released the series in North America. When they start to mess with Yoko, Erica defends her.When everyone falls asleep, the eldest of the orphans, Ninon Silber, tells Erica that she is the daughter of nobility and that she could make her life easier if she listens to her and does what she says.The following morning, the girls visit Erica and Yoko and the eldest orphan tells Erica that she must prove her loyalty by feeding Yoko bugs.Upset with what had taken place, Erica instead puts the bugs in the mouth Ninon and Erica is beaten by Ninon and the other girls.Meanwhile, a group of hunters are on the search for Yoko and word has it that she and Erica have been seen at an orphanage. But when the hunters arrive, they find out that they are at the wrong orphanage with all boys, not all girls.Back at the village where Erica and Yoko are at, the orphan girls try to make things good with Erica and Yoko, but just when things are looking good, the village where the orphanage is located is attacked by the Heusch-Recken.With a mass attack, can Erica and Yoko survive the onslaught?For those who have never read any of Kishiro Yukito’s work, just know that the world has gone to crap.While “Battle Angel Alita” (Gunnm) was fascinating in a way that it focused on Gally (Alita) as a hunter, “Battle Angel Alita: Mars Chronicle” volume 1 tries to establish Yoko’s (Gally) earlier life.The first volume is more to establish that setting, her close relationship with Erica and these two characters will be important to the overall storyline later on.While I don’t want to spoil to much of the story of volume 1, if anything, one just needs to know that these two characters are a product of a world gone mad. And how these two individuals are shaped from there upbringing, will set the stage for these two to meet once again after being separated.Featuring another solid story from Kishiro Yukito, and artwork that is lively, it’s important to emphasize that this is a violent manga series. People of all ages are killed, some in the worse ways possible. So, don’t be fooled by the character design and thinking this is a children’s manga series, it most definitely is not.Overall, a solid first volume and I can’t wait for volume 2! Yukito Kishiro’s “Battle Angel Alita Mars Chronicle” is recommended!

The original Battle Angel was one of my favorite mangas but the sequel Last Order was twice as long with half the story. Book after book boiled down to 200 pages of karate robots describing their favorite moves.I was ambivalent about Mars Chronicle, the prequel to the original. After all the story will focus on your hero before she was a hero and the ending is predestined. And the cover showing Alita as a toddler doesn't exactly inspire confidence.But y'know this was really, really good. A great throwback to the original series with interesting settings, cool villains and for a toddler cyborg Alita gets to take a turn as a hero. With the books coming out at a regular pace I'll be staying with it.

Kit Morgan is a wonderful, imaginative writer and, as far as I'm concerned, she never fails to entertain.

I wanted to know more about Senator Klobuchar. Here is a wise mother, wife, down-to-earth politician, who grew up modestly, put criminals behind bars as a prosecutor, and has never forgotten where she came from or who she represents. She doesn't get much national attention. She works with Republicans and fellow Democrats to get meaningful legislation passed, not merely introduced. This is a great book. I sure like her.

Senator Klobuchar's memoir is described through honest and readable prose. I learned much about the work of politics and how to find ways to be productive by working with both sides of the political aisles, and accompishing good legislation that benefits all. The chapters varied in length, which worked against the reader and some sections were too "wordy" but over all this was a helpful look at local and national politics through the eyes of a seasoned legislator in both state and national venues.

I wasn't expecting a literary masterpiece. I wanted to get to know the candidate and to understand more about why she is so popular in her state and respected among her colleagues. Klobuchar is a sensible moderate who gets things done and an indefatigable campaigner who has what it takes to make a serious run and in my opinion has what it takes to be a good president. One of the things that impresses me in this book is the respect with which she speaks of her opponents in past political campaigns.

She is real, smart and hard working.

She cites the campfire girls code. The academic literary community will stipulate if you stop asking about 1000000 pages of lunch menus from 1999.

Interesting facts about about her life. I live in northern MN so know the areas she talked about. It gave me a better idea of the Senator I voted for. I appreciate her more after reading this book b

Amy is my senator and I am very proud of her. This book give us the story of how she came to run for Senator and all the mentors she had. It is written in a very warm and unassuming style. It was a lot like visiting with her over coffee and bars.

An easy read and refreshing to find a politician who can relate to the folks next door. I have great respect for Amy, and now introduce her to others through this book.

Ronald B. Adler is professor emeritus at Santa Barbara City College. Throughout his career, he has specialized in the study of organizational and interpersonal communication. He is the author of Confidence in Communication: A Guide to Assertive and Social Skills and coauthor of Understanding Human Communication, Interplay: The Process of Interpersonal Communication as well as the widely used text Looking Out/Looking In. Professor Adler is a consultant for a number of corporate, professional, and government clients and leads workshops in such areas as conflict resolution, presentational speaking, team building, and interviewing.   Jeanne Marquardt Elmhorst is an instructor in communication studies at Central New Mexico Community College in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her courses reflect the variety in the communication discipline: business and professional, public speaking, listening, intercultural, and interpersonal. Jeanne lived and taught in Asia for three years and continues to find opportunities to travel, study, and volunteer in other countries. !!!THE BOOK IS GREAT BUT ORDER THE KINDLE OR A NEW PHYSICAL BOOK!!!I needed this book for class. It's a 5 week long class and I didn't think paying $120+ for a book I'll only use for a month seemed like a wise move so I opted for a used book. I got the used book for $75. This thing looks like it was ran over, eaten off of, then left for dead in a back alley. It really looks like a book that was found in a dumpster.I returned it and got the Kindle rental and I'm more than happy with that product.The actual content of the book is good and it's interesting enough to keep me reading past the material required for assignments.

I love this text book. I’m studying communication studies in college as a sophomore. It does apply many communication principles to an organizational setting, but honestly a lot of the content is applicable with any relationship and communication setting.

The book is usable for it's content but has water damage to the front and back. Definitely has been used and has one semester left in it.

The book came in poor condition. There is writing on every page, it looks like a cup of water was spilled on the book, some pages were completely folded and it's just very worn. The book I got should be thrown into the recycling bin or rented out for 5 bucks.

Boring, Would rather stare at a wall or a dumpster fire

It's a good book. Good insight especially with the consideration towards cross-cultural sensitivity. It covers everything from body language to interviewing. I think it would be even more handy if I had a job to put this information to use.

I'm renting the text. It's in pretty good shape. Definitely better than i expected.

Good read actually. This is a textbook for a class I am taking, but the information in here is stuff everyone working in an office environment should read. Too bad I rented, I might have handed this one off to a few co-workers.
