Then, in mid-May 1897, the ice on the Yukon River broke. A few grizzled miners packed their nuggets and gold flakes into battered bags and boxes, headed downriver to St Michael, and from there by steamer to Seattle and San Francisco. Among them were Clarence and Ethel Berry. Clarence had been working as a bartender in Bill McPhee’s Fortymile saloon that momentous evening when Carmack had sauntered in with his gold; the Berrys had rushed to the Klondike and staked a highly lucrative claim; it’s said that when Ethel wanted housekeeping money, she just walked out to the yard, bashed the frozen pile of paydirt with a stick, and helped herself to a couple of nuggets. As she and her husband sailed for civilization they were dressed in rags, but carried gold worth $130,000.The Excelsior docked in San Francisco on 14 July 1897. America was at the time in the grips of depression and when a weary public saw the cargo that her passengers had hauled from the Klondike, its imagination was set ablaze. By the time the Portland, also from St Michael, arrived in Seattle three days later, 5,000 people crowded the docks to gaze – and Klondike fever swept the city.‘GOLD! GOLD! GOLD! GOLD!’ shrieked the headline of the Seattle Post Intelligencer on 17 July 1897. ‘Sixty-Eight Rich Men on the Steamer Portland. Stacks of yellow metal.’‘All that anyone hears at present is “Klondyke,”’ the Seattle Daily Times reported six days later. ‘It is impossible to escape it. It is talked in the morning; it is discussed at lunch; it demands attention at the dinner table; it is all one hears during the interval of his after-dinner smoke; and at night one dreams about mountains of yellow metal with nuggets as big as fire plugs.’Storekeepers closed up shop, clerks resigned their posts, policemen left their beats and teachers abandoned their classrooms. Within weeks, thousands – including a young Jack London – had left home to find their fortunes in the Klondike.

I found this book very helpful by letting me know what there is to see in the Yukon Territory. However, during my recent trip there I found that many items in the book are outdated. Of the restaurants listed, I found that a number of them are no longer in business -- one having apparently closed over seven years ago. I also found that some lodging and tour information was also no longer accurate and, in one case, the tour was no longer operating.I would recommend this book as a means of getting an overview of what there is to see, primarily because I have not been able to find any other Yukon travel guide as extensive as this one. However, I would also recommend that once you enter any Yukon town or city that you first check at the visitors' Center to see what is still operating, times of operation, etc., and not rely on this book for such information. I would also be very flexible regarding restaurants rather than merely following the book's recommendations.Due to the financial problems Parks Canada is facing, at least one very popular tourist sight is being closed. I was informed that the much visited Dredge #4 outside of Dawson City will no longer be open following this present summer (2012). However, there still remains much to see in the Yukon Territory, and I highly recommend it as a place to visit -- especially if you are interested in old "gold rush" history, viewing wildlife and beautiful lakes, learning about First Nation (Native American) cultures, etc.

Good info for an uncommonly traveled-to area. The book is a few years old, but still had some of the best detail that I've found.

Must have for anyone traveling to Alaska

I bought this book to help me with a trip that I am planning next summer. What I wanted to know was more about the areas that I wanted to visit and if there were affordable places to eat at the stops. The author writes about his love of the territory and the beauty of it, but I always feel as though I am not getting enough specific information to help me. For each town, there are only about four restaurants suggested, there is little about the different excursions that are available and an opinion about them. I think that I need to buy another book as this one seems useless to me.

Great guide!

This is, as far as I can tell, the only Yukon-specific guidebook out there (most others tend to shoehorn it in as an afterthought at the back of a book about British Columbia or Alaska), and it's a good one. It covers pretty much every inhabited place in the territory with solid basics, plus detail for those who want to get off the beaten path for hiking/camping/etc. We used it for a several-week trip and were never steered wrong.I'm not sure exactly what the other reviewer's mental picture of the Yukon is, but it doesn't seem to be too grounded in reality. Outside of Whitehorse and Dawson City, most of what passes for civilization is hamlets of a few dozen to (at most) a thousand or so people. "Only" four restaurants is, for most towns, an exhaustive list of every possible dining option. Travelling the Yukon ain't like driving down the Eastern Seaboard.

This is a really comprehensive guide to the Yukon. (Parts of the Northwest Territory are covered - those sections you can reach via the Yukon). The book is written by an English author who's spent some considerable time in the territory. Her writing style is fun and I get the impression she's writing for the British/European crowd, but this works okay for this American. I previously purchased "Moon Spotlight: The Yukon & Northwest Territory" by Andrew Hempstead. It's 1/4 the size of this Brandt Travel Guide, almost a booklet. This is a real book-size guide. The only potential drawback is that this book is a few year's old, but I don't see that as a problem when facts and such can be checked on-line. I will update once I actually visit the Yukon this summer.

A friend bought me this book as I was moving to St Louis and had never even visited the city prior to my job relocation. I ended up in the middle of Delmar and the Central West End so I definitely enjoyed the different neighborhood guides and taking the train downtown to visit the others. At this point I've bought this as a gift after my mom followed me a year later as she loved St Louis as well and I always leave it on the table for guest to peruse in the event they find something they want to check out.GREAT GUIDE. Fits in your back pack for those who enjoy adventure.

This guidebook of St. Louis is pretty lousy. It reads just like a yellowpages phonebook. The inside of the book is black and white, and there are no photos. The particular items are in small, blocked entries and if you have never been to St. Louis before, you will have no clue where to start in this book.A free Internet search will turn up better things to do in St. Louis than this book, save your money.

The material was good and helpful. I bought it for a grandchild to help plan a trip. A few picutres of the sites would have been nice. As it was the only picture was on the cover.

Check out the chapter titled "History" that starts on page 10 for, well --for St. Louis history. Blueberry Hill is listed on pages 51, 72 and 123. The Duck Room, where Chuck Berry, known as "the father of rock 'n' roll," plays his monthly gig (see description on page 72) hosts such a diverse line-up of bands throughout the year that it doesn't fit within the description of being a "blues club." The "Live Blues" sidebar on page 65 lists a number of the region's best self-described blues clubs. Information about "the Catholics" can be found in the Worship chapter on page 215. Thanks for the tip on Talayna's -- I'll give it another try.

I was very disappointed in this guide book. I like a guide book to start off with an intro about the history of the place. There was nothing of the sort in this book. St Louis has an amazing history and you can't appreciate the city without that background. The Mighty Mississippi, Louis and Clark, the Catholics, and all that great stuff. It failed to mention Blueberry Hill, the great blues club that hosts Chuck Berry once a month. How can you leave that out of the listing of blues clubs? Also, no mention of Talayna's Pizza, the best pizza in town.

EDIT - came back and dropped this from 3 stars to 2. The recipes are ok; the book is tough to use. There's too much flipping back and forth between recipes, and there's very little info as to the nutritional value listed with the recipes. And frankly, I think all of the editing and printing mistakes (not the authors fault) just frustrate me. Wait for the next edition, if there is one.-- Original review --We've only been using it a few days now, and the recipes are good. But the book itself is hard to use. See pics for examples - missing page references, lack of info about what equipment to use, etc. I cook *a lot* so I'm working through it. But for someone who doesn't cook much and is trying to get their kids interested in better food, this might be a struggle to work with.I've uploaded three pics as examples - just a few of the many problems found in the book. First pic: Where's the page number? Second pic: It's handy knowing which recipes these are used in, but again - a page number would really help. Third pic: obviously an editing/formatting mistake, of which there are many in the book.So again, the recipes are pretty good and we'll use them. But the book itself can be a challenge to use. Lots of flipping around and cross referencing to make it work.

I've had this book for a while now and I've tried using it twice.It didn't really help me feed my kidz any more veggies as they could still taste whatever it was that they weren't interested in.The theory is awesome. Putting it into motion can be expensive and not very practical, to be honest with you.My kidz didn't like the Macaroni and cheese or several other dishes.So for me and my family, it just didn't work out very well. I've found better results by just using budget friendly recipes that taste great.Also, if you have blood sugar issues like me. blending all those veggies can really make your blood sugar spike. So for me, this one is a no go.

3 Star Review for poor editing only, otherwise I rate between 4 and 5 (haven't finished the book yet)Poor Editing: Quite a few pages and recipes in the kindle for phone, PC, and cloud reader are missing the fractional measurement number for ingredients. See photo - I can't make this recipe unless I consult the paperback version of the book, which I don't own (yet), because I can't tell how much of 4 separate ingredients are required to make it. I've tried reading it on the kindle app for phone, PC, and amazon cloud reader and all share this problem of missing measurements.Great Content: The content is well presented, organized, and very readable, and informative. I've only had the opportunity to make one of the recipes (brownies) so far, but I look forward to making more. The brownies were a little heavy and fudge-like, which I enjoy, but if you're looking for fluffy cake-like brownies you may need to experiment. I used her suggestion to replace both white and whole wheat flours with whole wheat pastry flour in my batch.

This is a great book to start but I would recommend getting all of them. My picky toddler eats peas, broccoli, spinach, carrots...you name it...without flinching (foods he won't normally touch)! This is a book about pureeing vegetables and adding them to foods you eat without anyone knowing. It's great that the author has done the experimenting for you so you don't have to guess what purees work well with each food. I mostly use the dinner recipes in this and her other books and I still offer vegetables whole along with each dish that but now I'm not worried when he throws them on the floor. When he's ready to accept them whole I will still use this book because even the adults in my house know we always want seconds of the main dish so that means extra veggies!

Great book !! I know a lot of the places and some faces as I was born in and grew up in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe and have been forcibly removed from my homeland. I understand a lot of the reasons and conclusions for and from his journey, as I find myself in a similar position and mindset. I would like to thank Mike for putting his heart and mindset into words as it has helped me understand a path forward, both mentally and as a white African!

The shear challenge of a solo adventure of this nature is superbly portrayed, but this book is more about the river, its people, and its fauna and flora. The author clearly illustrates the extreme inequality in Africa, and how human greed adversely effects some of the truly precious areas we have on this planet.

Mike's adventure is filled with excitement, nerve-wracking and touching moments. His interactions (sometimes entirely lacking speech) with the people living next to the Zambezi are especially endearing and reminds one of the power of kindness and generosity.

I really enjoyed the story but was very disappointed not to find any pictures included in the Kindle edition :( Given the price for the eBook is relatively high compared to print , pictures should really have been included, so feeling a bit cheated.
